October 07, 2011 | Volleyball

SEATTLE, Wash. - The University of Colorado volleyball team recorded one more kill than No. 3 Washington, but fell 25-14, 25-21, 25-20 on Friday night at Alaska Airlines Arena.

This was the sixth ranked opponent the Buffs have faced in seven matches and it was also the fifth top-five team in that same stretch. Colorado fell to 5-11 overall, 0-8 in the Pac-12, while UW improved to 14-1, 6-1 in the Pac-12.

The Buffs had 35 kills in the effort compared to UW's 34. Kerra Schroeder led the Buffs with nine kills and Emily Alexis and Nikki Lindow each had eight. Kylin Munoz led the Huskies with a match-high 15 kills.

Colorado also outdug the Huskies. The Buffs had 38 digs, while UW had 30. Megan Beckwith had a match-best 13 digs and Alyssa Valentine added eight digs.

The Huskies took a 10-2 lead in the first set and extended it to 18-7 before the Buffs put together a 4-1 run to cut the lead to 19-11. CU wasn't able to hold off UW as the Huskies went on to take the set 25-14. The Buffs recorded seven kills in the set, but had eight errors (five into the Huskies' block) on 26 attacks. UW had 10 kills and four errors on 25 swings.

CU got out to a much better start in the second set, taking an 8-6 lead. UW regained the lead at 10-9, but the Buffs didn't let up and stayed with UW the entire set. Colorado got within a point of the Huskies on eight more occasions before UW took a 24-21 lead. The Buffs tried to hold off the Huskies on the next point, but after a long rally UW finished the set (25-21) with a kill from Munoz. CU hit better in the frame, recording 12 kills, one more than UW's 11.

The third set started off well for the Buffs as they took a 12-6 lead, forcing UW to take a timeout. CU maintained the lead until the Huskies tied the set at 15-15. The score would be tied four more times before UW took a 20-19 lead. The Huskies finished the set 25-20 with a 5-1 run. The Buffs recorded a match-high 16 kills in the set, three more than UW's 13.

The Buffs will face Washington State on Saturday night in Pullman, Wash. at 8 p.m. MST.
