Kipp, Stewart Awarded CU Athlete of the Week

November 16, 2011 | Cross Country, Football, General

BOULDER - Football's Rodney Stewart (senior) and cross country's Shalaya Kipp (sophomore) both receive the CU Athlete of the Week honor for their athletic accomplishments the week of November 7-13.

Stewart, a 5-foot-6 tailback originally from Westerville, Ohio (Brookhaven), rushed 24 times for 181 yards and three touchdowns in Colorado's 48-29 win over Arizona. Stewart also caught two passes for 23 yards (204 all-purpose yards) and threw a 14-yard touchdown pass to quarterback Tyler Hansen. Stewart earned 10 first downs (8 rush/1 pass/1 receiving) and the 181 yards rushing were the 15th most in CU history where the player was not stopped behind the line of scrimmage. He missed the entire second quarter with a sprained ankle and had 137 of his 181 rushing yards in the second half.

Kipp, originally from Salt Lake City, Utah (Skyline), placed fourth overall at the NCAA Mountain Region Championships. For the fourth time this season, Kipp led the women's cross country team, crossing the 6k finish line in 20 minutes, 59.7 seconds. Earning all-region honors, Kipp was 24.5 seconds behind the winner, UTEP's Risper Kimaiyo (20:35.2). Finishing just ahead of teammate Emma Coburn (21:00.0), Kipp helped the No. 3 CU women record 84 points to tie with No. 19 New Mexico.

Also nominated for this week's award: Andre Roberson (men's basketball), Richard Medina (men's cross country), Kerra Schroeder (volleyball) and Brittany Wilson (women's basketball).

Men's Basketball: Andre Roberson, So., San Antonio, Texas

Sophomore Andre Roberson recorded his sixth career double-double with a 13-point, 15-rebound performance in Colorado's 85-57 home win over Fort Lewis College to open the 2011-12 season. All 13 points were scored in the first half, along with nine of his rebounds. The 15 rebounds tie a career best. His previous 15-board game occurred last season in CU's 77-75 first round win over Iowa State at the Big 12 Championships. 13 of Roberson's game-high 15 rebounds against Fort Lewis came on the defensive effort.

Men's Cross Country: Richard Medina, Sr., Grand Junction, Colo.

Senior Richard Medina led the No. 4 CU men's cross country team to a second place finish at the NCAA Mountain Region Championship, earning a bid to the NCAA Championships on Nov. 21. Medina finished the 10k race sixth overall in 30:36.7 and was named to the all-region team.  The men finished just six points behind third-ranked BYU, which recorded 49 points.
