Morris and Hartman Named CU's Athletes of the Week
February 01, 2011 | General, Track and Field, Skiing
BOULDER-Katie Hartman (skiing) joins Joe Morris (track and field) as CU's Athletes of the Week for the week of January 24-30. Morris also received the honor last week after his outstanding performance at the Potts Indoor Invitational.
Hartman, an alpine skier from Breckenridge, Colo., made school history when she became the first CU skier to win a gold medal at the World University Games (or any world level competition). Representing the United States and the University of Colorado, Hartman won the gold in the Super G race at the 25th World University Games in Turkey. She joins Erika Hogan as the only other CU skier to medal, when Hogan earned the silver in the slalom in 2003. The senior skier became just the fourth U.S. skier to win a gold medal at the World University Games in the past nine years.
Morris dominated at the U.S. Air Force Academy's Don Barrett Duals on Saturday, taking home two individual titles and one team title. He finished the 60-meter dash in a quick 6.70 seconds for the fifth fastest time by a CU racer (he set the CU record in the same event last week, finishing in 6.63 seconds). His 200-meter finish of 21.53 was tied as the ninth best CU finish all-time. The sophomore from Golden, Colo. joined teammates Kyle MacIntosh, Matthew McCathran, and Blake Reimer as they raced to a 3:18.21 finish in the men's 4x400-yard relay, besting host school AFA by .04 seconds.
Also nominated this week were Emma Coburn (track and field) and Alec Burks (men's basketball).
Coburn stood out at the UW Invitational this past Saturday. Racing to the 10th fastest finish this season in the indoor mile, she placed fifth overall and was the second collegiate racer to finish (the top three finishers were professional runners). Her time was strong enough to beat any other Big 12 athlete this season.
Burks led the Buffs men's basketball team with two strong performances as they went 0-2 this week with losses to No. 6 Kansas and Baylor. In their 78-82 loss against the Jayhawks, Burks put up a game-high 25 points and led the Buffs with six rebounds. He also contributed a blocked shot. In Waco to face the Bears, he scored another 20 points. With these two strong showings, Burks averaged 22.5 points, six rebounds and two steals for the week.
