BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team received victories from their top three singles players, then added the doubles point to defeat New Mexico, 5-2 for their first home win of the season at the Meadows Club.
Senior Abbie Probert, junior Michala Hedelund Jensen, and freshmen Kristina Schleich and Carla Manzi Tenorio all recorded singles tallies at the No. 1, No. 2, No. 3, No. 5 positions, respectively helping the Buffaloes even their 2011 spring record at 3-3.
The Lobos, playing their second match in as many days, fell to 5-5. New Mexico lost to Oregon, 6-1 on Saturday.
"I've been emphasizing the importance of winning the close sets," said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. "Today, we were successful in all situations and that led to the 5-2 victory. We look for today's win to build on those opportunities with the number of matches left to be played on the schedule."
The Buffs started the day securing the doubles point taking two of three positions and a 1-0 lead.
At No. 1, Colorado took a step in gaining control of the doubles competition taking an 8-2 win with Hedelund Jensen and Probert defeating Ashley Bonner and Anya Villanueva, 8-2. It was Hedelund Jensen/Probert's fifth win of the year.
The Lobos evened the doubles event taking the No. 2 slot, 8-6, then at No. 3, CU clinched the point with an 8-6 winner led by the freshmen tandem of Manzi Tenorio and Winde Janssens edging Kristin Eggleston and Laura Richardson, 8-6.
Janssens/Manzi Tenorio remained unbeaten in spring play with their fourth straight match and improved to a team-best 8-2 mark.
In singles, the Buffs continued to dominate the match going up 3-0 on the scoreboard, winning the next two singles matches behind Hedelund Jensen and Schleich at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.
Hedelund Jensen edged Nikolina Grbac, 7-5, 6-4 for her team-best 15th win of the year at No. 2; then Schleich followed with a pair of back-to-back tie-breaker set wins over Anya Villanueva, 7-6(5), 7-6(4). It was Schleich's fourth straight win, and her fifth in six matches.
CU later clinched the match with a 4-0 lead as Probert earned her 40th career singles win rallying from a set down and defeating Michaela Bezdickova, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 at the top singles match. It was Probert's seventh clinching team win and the fifth time over her four-year career she has rallied to win the match after dropping the first set.
The three-set victory also moved Probert into 21st place for combined singles (40) and doubles (59) triumphs in school history passing Veera Nurmi (2004-08). Probert now has 99 wins.
CU rounded out the scoring at No. 5 as Manzi Tenorio won her 10th match of the year defeating Michaela Oldani 6-2, 6-0.
Colorado continues the non-conference portion of the schedule this week traveling to Arkansas for a pair of matches against the Razorbacks on Friday, Feb. 25 (11 a.m.) and against the Rice Owls on Saturday, Feb. 26 (11 a.m.).
