Track and Field's Dreher, Mullen Earn CU Athlete of the Week
February 22, 2011 | General, Track and Field
Dreher, a combined events competitor from Salida, Colo., recorded personal bests in three events on Friday night. Her high jump of 5-7 was the best mark for a University of Colorado athlete this season and tied her for first place at the meet. The jump was also good enough to tie her for the eighth best jump in school history. The junior also placed fifth in the long jump with a jump of 18-01.25. Again, her jump was the best by any CU athlete this season and tied her for sixth all-time on CU's performers list. She finished the 60 meter hurdles in 9.27 seconds, a personal best giving her an eighth place finish.
Mullen continued his strong throwing record this season. The 6-4 senior recorded CU's best throw this year in the weight throw with a toss of 56 feet, 11.25 inches. The throw beat his previous personal record by more than one foot (55-08.25), and he now has the top three marks by a CU athlete this season.
Also nominated this week were golf athletes Emily Talley (women's golf) and Jason Burstyn (men's golf), basketball's Levi Knutson (men's basketball) and tennis' Abbie Probert (women's tennis).
Talley lead the Buffs to a fourth place team finish for the first spring tournament of the women's golf season. After ending Saturday's finish tied for 18th, she came out swinging on Sunday, finishing the first round in a tie for second place. A triple bogey with four holes to go put her out of contention for the individual title, but she still managed to finish 9th overall. Talley's finish gave her a school record nine straight top 20 performances.
Burstyn tied for 29th in the Battle at the Beach with a 69-75-75--218 scorecard. It was the sophomore's best collegiate career finish so far (his previous best individual finish was at the Big 12 Championships where he finished tied for 30th). He led the team in birdies (9) and tied for second in pars (30). CU finished 13th overall in the tournament.
Knutson scored 10 points in the first half of Colorado's game at Kansas. The senior guard went 4-of-7 shooting in the first half, and finished with 13 points total. He was one of four CU basketball players to finish in double-digits, and also contributed three rebounds, three assists and two steals.
Probert led the women's tennis team to a team victory over New Mexico this past week. The London, England native came from behind to defeat Michaela Bezdickova 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. Her victory earned was her 40th singles win and marked the seventh time she's clinched a team win. Her three-set victory was enough to move her into 21st place for combined singles (40) and doubles (59) wins in school history. She is now just one win shy of earning 100 career wins.
