Skiers Earn CU Athlete Of The Week Honors

February 08, 2011 | General, Skiing

BOULDER-- The men's and women's skiers hit the slopes in winning fashion, earning Andreas Haug (men's skiing) and Erika Ghent (women's skiing) the CU Athlete of the Week honors for January 31-February 6.

Haug, a freshman, dominated the slalom races at the New Mexico Invitational Saturday, winning two races. His victories gave him his first wins as a collegian. The Blommenholm, Norway native became CU's eighth skier to win a men's slalom race in the last decade. He is now in third place for the NCAA Championship qualifications with two races remaining.

Ghent, a sophomore based out of Edwards, Colo., became the third CU skier ever to medal at the 25th World University Games. Her silver medal in the Super Combined race puts her in the company of teammate Katie Hartman, who won a gold medal last week at the WUG, and former CU skier Erika Hogan (bronze in 2003). The Super Combined race combines one slalom race and one Super G race. Ghent took second place in each of those races, and her combined times were just three-tenths of a second short of taking the gold. Her additional performances on the week made her the only skier at the World University Games to take home four top 10 finishes. Following the competition, Ghent was awarded the gold medal for her overall performance on the week, essentially making her the MVP of the World University Games for women's alpine.

Also nominated this week was Derek Fribbs (men's golf), Joe Morris (men's track and field), Marcus Relphorde (men's basketball), Brook Reagan (women's track and field), Kristina Schleich (women's tennis) and Brittany Spears (women's basketball).

Fribbs led the CU men's golf team in the Amer Ari Invitational in Waikoloa, Hawaii this past week. In the first round, he finished a 2-under 70, tying him for 41st. Over the course of the tournament, he looked strong, shooting eight birdies, 38 pars (tied for the team high) and eight bogeys. His final round stroke average was 72.2 which now leads the team.

Morris looked solid at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Saturday. His 21.09 second 200-meter finish was the third fastest time in CU history and was good enough to earn him second place (he was the fastest collegiate finisher as former CU standout and now volunteer assistant coach Jeremy Dodson finished first). Morris joined teammates Kyle MacIntosh, Matthew McCathran and Blake Reimer as they raced to a first-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay.

Relphorde averaged 14 points and seven rebounds as the CU men's basketball team went 1-1 on the week. He led the team with six assists and added 15 points in the Buffs' 95-69 victory over Iowa State. The Chicago native recorded his third career double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds in CU's road loss against Missouri.

Regan, the sophomore from Loveland, Colo., took fifth place in the 600-yard run at the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational on Saturday. Her time of 1 minute, 23.70 seconds was the second fastest time in school history, and is now eighth best in the Big 12.

Freshman Schleich earned Colorado's lone point in their 5-1 loss to No. 48 Utah. She defeated Lucia Kovarcikova 6-4, 6-0 at the No. 3 spot. She is now 2-1 on the season, and has won 10 matches. This is good enough for second on the team.

Spears had two strong performances, leading the women's basketball team to a 1-1 finish on the week. Her 26 points over Nebraska tied her team season high. She also contributed five rebounds, two steals and a block and assist as the Buffs' crushed the Huskers, 70-45. Her effort earned her 100th career double-figure game and 39th career 20-point game. She added 18 points, six rebounds, one block, assist and steal in the team's 53-81 loss to Kansas.
