Pixler, Burks Score Athlete Of The Week Honors

March 23, 2011 | General, Men's Basketball, Track and Field

BOULDER-- Jessica Pixler (women's track and field) and Alec Burks (men's basketball) dominated in their respective sports during this past week's competition spanning from March 14-20 earning them each a CU Athlete of the Week honor.

Pixler, a current CU graduate student, made her presence felt in her NCAA Division I debut. Pixler had previously run at the DII level, where she excelled as a 12-time All-American at Seattle Pacific as an undergraduate. This past week she finished first in the 1,500-meter run with a final time of 4 minutes, 29.55 seconds, 17 seconds faster than the next closest finisher. Her time was also strong enough to break the former Potts Field record in the 1500, besting a 4:29.79 time set by Veronica Martin (Oklahoma State) set in 1986.

Burks has continued to impress as the men's basketball team continues to dominate the NIT in Boulder. He averaged 26 points and 6.5 rebounds in victories against Texas Southern and California. His combined 52 points against the two teams elevated Burks' name in the school record books, breaking the CU-record for most points scored in a single season (734). The record was previous held by Cliff Meely when he scored 729 points during the 1970-71 season.

Other nominees for the week include Chucky Jeffery (women's basketball), Winde Janssens (women's tennis) and Joe Morris (men's track and field).

Jeffery has also been brilliant as the CU women's basketball team prepares for the third round of the WNIT. This past week she logged her tenth career double-double (ninth of the season) with 19 points and 12 rebounds against UC Riverside. She also contributed four assists in CU's victory 71-62 victory over UC Riverside.

Janssens led the lady Buffs in Colorado's 6-1 losses to No. 22 Texas and No. 26 Texas A&M on the week. She won her two singles matches, beating the Horns' Amanda Craddock, 7-5, 1-6, 1-0 (10-2) and A&M's Janelle Cuthbertson, 6-3, 6-2. The two wins improved her record to 8-4 on the season for singles play. She continues a strong streak, having now won four of her last six matches.

Morris has continued to show strongly for the men's track and field team. This past week he placed first in the 100 in a quick 10.53 seconds and second in the 200 (20.99 seconds). He was barely edged out by CU's volunteer assistant coach Jeremy Dodson who finished in 20.86 seconds.
