Buffs Finish Fourth At MountainView Collegiate
March 26, 2011 | Women's Golf
TUCSON, Ariz. - Four! It's officially a trend. The No. 29 University of Colorado women's golf team finished fourth for the fifth straight tournament, including all four this spring, this time at its own MountainView Collegiate Saturday here at the MountainView Golf Club at Saddlebrooke.
On top of finishing fourth for the fifth straight tournament, this is also the fifth straight day of competition in which the Buffs have held fourth place at the end of the day.
"I feel like Bill Murray did in Groundhogs Day," CU head coach Anne Kelly said. "But seriously, I'm very proud of our top four players. Emily (Talley), Jess (Wallace), Kristin (Coleman) and Jenny (Coleman) all played well, tried extremely hard and if they keep doing the things they're doing, the rewards will come."
The five teams ranked in the top 40 in the latest golfstat rankings took home the top five spots in the final standings. No. 14 Iowa State took home the championship with an impressive 7-under par score of 857, breaking the three-round MountainView record of 2-over par 866 set by Nebraska in 2007 and San Jose State in 2009. Both No. 24 Oklahoma (863) and No. 12 Arkansas (864) would have set the team record, as well. The Buffs fired a final round 2-over par 290 to finish 9-over par 873 and No. 39 Minnesota took home fifth place with a 19-over par 883.
Talley posted her second straight round under par, firing a 1-under 71 to finish 1-under 215 and tied for fourth. She opened her round with a birdie on the par 3 fourth hole and then had 10 straight pars before she had a bogey, but she followed that up with another birdie and then pared her last five holes to remain under par. She now has nine rounds under par this season, bettering her CU record and breaking a tie with Wallace.
"I started the round off on a good note, that par 3 was one of the trickier holes of the course," Talley said. "I stuck it to three feet and left myself an easy putt, which is always good for my confidence. Overall, 15 pars, two birdies and one bogey doesn't make for an exciting round, but consistent at least."
Wallace finished tied for sixth at even par 216 with a final round 1-over par 73. She opened her round with a bogey and after a six hole stretch that saw consecutive birdies, two bogeys and another birdie to remain even before a bogey on the 18th hole.
"All of my bogeys today were three putts, so I just wasn't converting my small putts," Wallace said. "The three-footers and in, that's what hurt me today, my short game was on, not so much my putting. We come in to each tournament with a goal in mind, and we thought we could win this tournament. We're a little disappointed, but it's encouraging when we're not firing on all cylinders with five golfers that we're finishing in the top five still."
Jenny Coleman birdied her last two holes carded her second straight under round par, the first two of her collegiate career, with a 1-under 71 in the final round. After opening with a 76 in the first round, she was in 52nd place, and she moved up to 25th after her first subpar round and she had another significant jump up the board to finish tied for 12th a 2-over par 218, her best tournament score as a collegian.
Kristin Coleman finished tied for 39th at 8-over par 224 after a final round 3-over 75. She was consistent in her final round with 15 pars and three bogeys. Freshman Tessa The struggled to a final round 17-over par 89 and finished 29-over par 245 in 91st place while sophomore Taylor Doyle, playing individually, carded a final round 9-over par 81 for a three round total of 18-over par 234.
Arkansas Emily Tubert ran away with the individual crown, firing a final round 5-under par 67 to finish 9-under par 207 in the three rounds. She matched the individual round mark with her 67 and set a new tournament record, bettering the old mark of 7-under par 209, accomplished by Erika Moston from San Jose State in 2009, Elanie Harris from Indiana in 2007 and Meghan Little from Louisville in 2005. Iowa State's Prima Thammaraks took second with a 4-under par 212, Colorado State's Brianna Espinoza took third at 2-under par 214 and there was a two way tie for fourth between Talley and Texas Tech's Gabriella Dominguez at 1-under par 215.
Next up for the Buffs is the final regular season event, the Pacific Coast Intercollegiate, hosted by Oregon and UC Davis at Half Moon Bay, Calif., just over a week out on April 4-5.
"At this point in the season, it's just a matter of patience and keep pursuing our goals," Kelly said. " I think when post season rolls around, we'll be ready."
