Buffs Tied For Fourth At Gator Women's Invitational
March 06, 2011 | Women's Golf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. - With some inclement weather and that led to a rough start, juniors Emily Talley and Jess Wallace led the No. 29 University of Colorado women's golf team to a tie for fourth place here at the SunTrust Gator Women's Invitational through two rounds Sunday.
In likely the toughest field the Buffs played in this season, nine of the 17 teams here are ranked in the top 46 in the latest Golfstat rankings. Host and No. 34 Florida lead the way and holds a 17-stroke advantage over the field, carding a 12-over par 572. The Gators are followed by in-state foe, No. 38 Florida State, who is second at 29-over par 589. No. 22 Arkansas is third at 34-over par 594 and then the Buffs, No. 11 Iowa State and No. 46 Coastal Carolina are all tied for fourth at 36-over par 596.
The Buffs were a collective 23-over par through the first nine holes on the par 70, 6,002 yard Mark Bostick Golf Course at the University of Florida, and there were multiple instances of Buffs either improving the second part of their first or in their second rounds.
"We didn't start out too well at all today," CU head coach Anne Kelly said. "Our Nos. 4 and 5 golfers had a tough day. In some regards, it's the same story as the last couple of weeks, we are close but not where we want to be. We do have a chance to move up the leader board tomorrow, so that's good."
The one constant for the Buffaloes was the play of Talley, who carded two 1-over par 71s and currently sits tied for fourth at 2-over par 142. Talley had five bogeys and four birdies in the first round and got more pars in the second round with three bogeys and two birdies.
"I was a little more consistent in the second round," Talley said. "I definitely got off to a better start and was more confident. It was a long day. Overall, I was doing fine ball-striking throughout the day. I didn't have any terrible holes so that's a plus."
Wallace led the way for the Buffs in the second round after shooting a 5-over 75 in the first round. She bettered that score by seven strokes and shot a 2-under par 68 in the second round. At 3-over par 143, she is tied for sixth individually. Her first round consisted of 13 pars and five bogeys and then she was able to get four birdies in the second round with two bogeys.
Her 68 in the second round was her third round in the 60s this season, tied for the team lead with Talley, and it was also her eighth round under par this season, one more than Talley as the two are already first and second for most subpar rounds in a season in CU history.
"Jess really had it going, and really could've scored even lower," Kelly said. "She was hitting it well all day, she just didn't convert a lot of putts in the first round. She's not putting poorly. It was raining this morning, and then the wind picked up throughout the day, gusting and swirling."
"We walked out of the hotel this morning, it was dark and it was raining really hard," Talley said about the weather. "We got to the course, it lightened up, but it was still raining throughout the entire warm-up. It was warm, so we had our rain gear on but it felt like a sauna. It was fine and cleared up for the first nine holes or so, then there was a 15-minute period where it was crazy weather, it changed in an instant and was raining hard again. By the next hole, it was blue skies again."
Freshman Jenny Coleman showed signs of stellar play, shooting a 5-over 75 in the second round and 6-over 76 in the second to finish the two rounds at 11-over par and tied for 28th. After she was 4-over par five holes into her first round, she played the remainder of that round at 1-over par, and then played the first first six holes of the second round at 1-under par before going 7-over par over the last 11 holes.
"Jenny had some really good moments, and struggled at times," Kelly said. "She will work through that and is getting closer and closer to breaking out."
Freshman Kristin Coleman finished the day at 21-over par 161 after shooting 9-over par in the first round and 12-over in the second and is tied for 73rd. Sophomore Taylor Doyle shot 17-over par in the first round and followed that up with an 11-over par second round to sit in 87th place at 28-over par. Junior Meaghan Kari, playing individually, is in 86th place at 25-over par with rounds of 11-over par and 14-over par, respectively.
The tournament will finish up Monday with 18 holes in an 8:30 a.m. ET shotgun start.
"Hopefully tomorrow we can get our fourth and fifth scorers a little bit lower," Kelly said. "And there's room for some lower scores with both Emily and Jess, as well. This is one of the better courses we play, it's a par 70 so it plays long and if you miss a green, it's a tough up and down. But there's definitely room for us to move up the leader board tomorrow."
