Tennis Falls At South Campus Courts

BOULDER - The University of Colorado women's tennis team split three of six singles positions with the No. 7 nationally ranked Baylor Bears, however fell on the scoreboard, 6-1, Sunday afternoon under 35 mile per hour winds gusts at the South Campus Courts.

The Bears have won 10-straight conference matches improving to 20-3 overall and to 8-1 in the Big 12. The Buffaloes drop to 3-16 overall and to 0-9 in Big 12 play.

"That was our best performance this year and against a top-10 team," CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said. "That's going to allow the girls to see what they are capable of and why we continue to put in the hard work.  It was a great effort from top-to-bottom and they did a great job focusing on what they could control and left everything on the court."

After Baylor took a 1-0 lead in the doubles portion their momentum continued in singles play as the visitors took the No. 1, No. 2, and No. 6 singles slots in straight sets. In the meantime, CU managed to win the first set at No. 3, then evened two other singles slots at a set apiece rallying back to win their respective second set.

Freshman Winde Janssens knocked off No. 117 ranked senior Jelena Stanivuk in the first set tie-breaker 7-6(5) at No. 3, then subsequently fell in the later two sets, 6-1 and 1-0 (10-1).

At No. 4, freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio rallied in her second set with a 6-3 winner, however lost the first and third by 6-2 and 6-4 margins to senior Karolina Filipiak.

At No. 5, junior Ania Anuszkiewicz rallied after dropping the first set, 6-2 to win in three sets over  senior Taylor Ormond, 7-6(2), 2-1 (retired). It was Anuszkiewicz' first singles win since Feb. 18 and her fifth career match victory after dropping the first set.

CU closes the home schedule on Wednesday, April 20 against No. 34 Nebraska at the South Campus Courts beginning with doubles at 2 p.m.
