Wallace, Talley Honored By Big 12

BOULDER GÇô University of Colorado junior Jess Wallace has been named the Big 12 Conference WomenGÇÖs Golf Newcomer of the Year, the league office announced Thursday, while she joins junior Emily Talley as were both named first-team All-Big 12, as well.

 

A transfer from Pepperdine, Wallace is the top ranked golfer in the Big 12 according to Golfstat, coming in at No. 28, and the No. 2 ranked golfer in the league as ranked by Golfweek (No. 43). The honors are derived from the Golfweek rankings. She is the first CU womenGÇÖs golfer to earn either player or newcomer of the year.

 

Talley joins Wallace on the first-team All-Big 12 team as the duo becomes just the third and fourth golfer honored on the All-Big 12 team, joining Hannah Hoch, who was second team in 2005, and Emily Childs, who was honored in 2009. The top 10 golfers in the league as ranked by Golfweek earned the honor.

Wallace is in the process of rewriting the CU season record book while Talley ranks second on most of those lists and as a junior, Talley already owns several CU career records as well, while combined both have aided in the Buffs also rewriting the team record book.

 

They have combined for nine top five finishes, Wallace with six (including at last weekGÇÖs Big 12 Championships) and Talley with three, besting the previous season mark of seven such finishes in 1998-99. WallaceGÇÖs six is CUGÇÖs season and career record while TalleyGÇÖs three is second on the season chart and her five career finishes ranks second.

 

CU has 19 top 10 individual finishes with Wallace (10) and Talley (7) combining for 17 of those, bettering the previous mark of 10 set four different seasons. Wallace owns the season record with Talley second while Talley owns the career record with 15 career top 10s.

 

Wallace owns a stroke average of 73.06, shattering the old record of 75.20 while TalleyGÇÖs mark of 74.29 is on pace to better the previous mark by nearly a stroke. Together they have helped the Buffs to a team stroke average of 76.23, bettering the previous team mark of 77.02 in 2008-09.

 

Wallace is the third CU player honored this season across all sports, joining Nate Solder, who was named the Offensive Lineman of the Year for football, and Levi Knutson, who was named the co-Sixth-Man of the Year for menGÇÖs basketball.

 

The Buffaloes return to action May 5-7, in Daytona Beach, Calif., at the Eastern Regional as part of the 2011 NCAA Championships. The Buffs are seeded No. 11 in the field of 24 and are looking to finish in the top eight, which would ensure them a trip to the NCAA Championships in College Station, Texas, May 18-21. It marks the Buffs second berth in an NCAA regional and they are looking for their first trip to the NCAA Championships.
