Men's Golf: Buffs Tie For Fifth At Wyoming Classic
April 05, 2011 | Men's Golf
No. 50 Baylor held off a charge by No. 64 Arizona, as the Bears posted an 836 team score for 54 holes, or 4-under par overall. Arizona was 4-under in the final round to finish up with an 839 score, 1-under and three out of the lead.
Colorado, ranked No. 99, recorded a final round score of 6-over 286, but held the same position it had entering the last round, tying for fifth in the end with No. 90 Nevada at 14-over 854. No. 73 Colorado State (841, +1) and No. 57 UC-Davis (843, +3) occupied third and fourth ahead of CU; Davis moved up three spots thanks to posting the best single round score in the tournament, an 8-under 272.
Though the Buffs didn't rise up in the standings as they had hoped, CU still defeated two top 40 teams here, No. 20 San Diego (seventh) and future Pac-12 rival, No. 33 Oregon State (ninth). Colorado is now 60-85-3 against Division I opponents this year, as the Buffs have their backs against the wall to earn a postseason berth into the NCAA regionals; teams must at least own a .500 record, or earn an automatic bid by winning their conference title. CU has one meet left before the Big 12 Conference Championships.
Colorado turned in a solid effort this week, ranking high in several categories: par-5 scoring (third, minus-8), par-4 scoring (fifth, +22), total pars (fourth, 173) and birdies (fourth, 38). The Buffs did struggle on the par-3's, playing them at 13-over for the three rounds (tied for 10th), and while no one played poorly, CU didn't have anyone put up a subpar number Tuesday: the four teams ahead in the standings had a combined nine players shoot 69 or lower.
Overall, a fairly solid effort. Today we played okay, didn't get anything electric going, however we hung in there," CU head coach Roy Edwards said. "No one played spectacular, but no one played poorly and we stayed in the same position as a result. We've had some bumps along the road this season, but the guys have done a really good job of getting a little bit better every day, and they're starting to see that pay off. It's just happened a little bit later than we wanted to, but it is great to see the guys enjoying some success."
Junior Sebastian Heisele led the Buffaloes, tying for 12th place with an even par 210 total on the 7,133-yard, par-70 North Course at Talking Stick Golf Club. He wrapped things up with a 3-over 73, with his 54-hole score matching the team low this season, while also being the best in his collegiate career by some four strokes, as he bettered a 214 in the 2009 DU-Ron Moore Invitational, his first collegiate meet. He had 39 pars over the three rounds (10th most), and played the par-5's at a collective 4-under, tied for third in the 104-man field.
Senior Luke Symons tied for 23rd, closing with a 2-over 72 for an overall 213 count, 3-over par. It was his third straight top 25 finish, as he is returning to his old form following a pair of hip surgeries that forced him to redshirt during the 2009-10 season. In those last three tournaments, Symons has played 162 holes at just 8-over par with a 72.2 stroke average.
Sophomores Derek Fribbs and Pat Wilson tied for 38th with 7-over 217 totals. Fribbs fired a 3-over 73 in the final round, with Wilson recording a 1-over 71, his second best single round as a collegian which also led to his 54-hole best score. Wilson's 14 birdies tied for the most in the tournament.
Sophomore Jason Burstyn turned in CU's best final round performance, carding an even-par 70. That jumped him 14 spots in the standings to tie for 57th with a 10-over 220 total.
"When your throw out scores are as low as ours were this week, that's a huge sign of the team getting better," Edwards added, as the Buffaloes didn't count the fifth scores of 76, 74 and 73, or an average of 74.3; coming in, that number for 27 rounds was 79.6.
Arizona's Tarquin Macmanus, who led after one round but fell three back after the second, rallied with a final round 66 to finish with an 8-under 202, besting Colorado State's Zahkai Brown (second round leader) and Joakim Mikkelsen, both of whom who were one shot back at 203. Macmanus' 202 total tied the tournament record set by Boise State's Troy Merritt in 2008, with his 14 birdies tying CU's Wilson for the most in the field.
The Buffaloes will resume action in two weeks at the Western Intercollegiate in Santa Cruz, Calif., the final tune-up ahead of CU's last appearance in the Big 12 Championships. The Western will be CU's fourth tournament in California this season, the seventh in a Pacific-10 Conference state, as the Buffs will join the league with Utah this July 1 to make it the Pac-12.
