Buffs End Season At NCAA Regional's

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The No. 31 University of Colorado women's golf team ended its most successful season in program history Saturday in the third and final round of the 2011 East Regional, posting a final round 18-over par 306 to finish in 18th place, the same position it held after the first two rounds. The top eight teams advanced to the NCAA Championships.

The Buffs posted nearly identical scores each day, going 18-over in the first round, 19-over in the second and 18-over in the third to finish 55-over par 919 and were tied or in sole possession of 18th place in each round.

No. 3 Alabama (2-over par 866) held off surges from No. 21 North Carolina (4-over par 868) and No. 10 Arizona (7-over par 871) to win the team event. Fourth through seventh were also close, as No. 49 Coastal Carolina finished fourth (12-over par 876) with one stroke each then separating No. 9 California (14-over par 878), No. 4 Purdue (15-over par 879) and No. 25 Florida (16-over par 880). There was a tie for the all-important eighth spot, as No. 23 Vanderbilt defeated No. 28 Florida State in a playoff as both teams finished regulation at 26-over par 890.

“We played about the same again today,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “We had a couple of rough holes. In this tournament, you have to be above average and we were definitely below average this weekend. I don't want to take anything away from our other good finishes this season, but hopefully this experience will pay off in the future.”

Junior Emily Talley and freshman Jenny Coleman led the way for the Buffaloes, both finishing the final round at 4-over par 76. Talley finished tied for 52nd at 11-over par 227 and Jenny Coleman finished three strokes back at 14-over par 230, the same score her twin sister carded after a final round 5-over par 77. Both finished tied for 69th.

Junior Jess Wallace, who set nearly every season record for the Buffs, finished tied for 85th at 16-over par 232 after a final round 5-over par 77. Sophomore Taylor Doyle carded a final round 7-over par 79 to finish tied for 112th at 26-over par 242.

“Everybody is disappointed and frustrated,” Kelly said. “We're not happy with how we finished the season. This can't take away from all the good things we did this season, and we're young, so this will help moving forward this summer and hopefully we come back strong next year as we enter the Pac-12.”

Alabama's Stephanie Meadow pulled away for individual medalist honors, carding a final round 3-under par 69 to finish at 9-under par 207, six strokes ahead of California's Pai Halbig, who had a final round 70 and was 3-under 213. Those were the only two players under par, but there was a three way tie for third at even par 216 between Coastal Carolina's Jessica Alexander, Florida State's Jessica Negron and Arizona State's Daniela Ordonez.
