Beemer Wins Pentathlon At Potts Invite

January 20, 2012 | Track and Field

BOULDER - University of Colorado redshirt junior Brianne Beemer raced to a time of 2 minutes, 21.10 seconds in the 800-meter run to win the pentathlon on Friday night at the Potts Indoor Invitational.

Beemer entered the fifth and final event of the pentathlon with a 22 point lead over (CU volunteer coach) Emily Pearson, but needed a strong finish to hold on to the lead. Beemer finished 3.7 seconds in front of Pearson to earn the victory while recording an impressive point total and personal record of 3,769, which was 72 points more than Pearson's second-place total of 3,697.

"It's been great to be back in a CU jersey this year," Beemer said. "It was a great day. I had a bunch of PRs and being able to finish the 800 first was a lot of fun."

Beemer had a solid day in her first pentathlon for the Buffs in almost two years after redshirting the 2011 season. She placed second in the 60-meter hurdles (9.05) and tied for first in the high jump after clearing 5 feet, 7 inches. Beemer added to her score in the shot put with a toss of 35-10.75, fifth overall, and was third in the long jump with a leap of 17-00.75.

"It's great to see Bri compete," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "One of the greatest things about our group is that everyone is out there to help each other and it truly showed in the women's high jump today. We had three athletes PR in the high jump today at 5-7, including Bri. I'm so happy to have her back in uniform and this is a sign of great things to come."

Freshman Brittany Lewis placed third in the meet, notching a score of 3,633 points. She was fourth in the 60-hurdles (9.24), sixth in the high jump (5-03.25) and shot put (35-10) and was fourth in the 800 (2:27.30). Lewis won the long jump after recording a mark of 18-01.75, the 10th best in CU's combined events history.

Senior Katie Dreher took fourth overall (3,522) at the invitational. She tied for first in the high jump with Beemer and Pearson as all three cleared 5-7. The mark tied Beemer and Dreher for 10th in CU's pentathlon history.

On the men's side, senior Eddie Taylor placed second in the heptathlon with 4,896 points. Sophomore Jason DeWitt was fourth with 4,348 points and junior Brock Emory was seventh (3,692). Adam Salzmann, who has exhausted his indoor eligibility for the Buffs, won the meet with 5,132 points.

"Eddie did fantastic," Malone said. "That was a new overall points total for him. There were still a lot of points left on the table, but that's the way of the multis. He has several other PR's and I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season."

Taylor started the day placing sixth in the 60-meter hurdles. He was second in the pole vault after clearing a height of 14-04.50 and finished the meet third in the 1,000, clocking a time of 2:52.73.

DeWitt had a good start to his day, finishing second in the 60-hurdles (8.78), but did not score a mark in the pole vault. He finished the 1,000 in 2:58.54, fourth overall.

The Potts Invite will conclude on Saturday, Jan. 21. The first events are the men's weight throw and the women's shot put at 10 a.m.; running events will commence at 2 p.m. with the preliminaries of the 60-meter dash. A complete schedule is available at CUBuffs.com.
