Colorado-Western State Quotes

November 03, 2012 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe

General
“We're excited to be underway, this was our last tune-up for the year and we're getting ready to get started with regular games. I was really proud of our effort; there is going to be some things that we have to fine-tune both offensively and defensively, but our effort was there all night long on both ends of the floor. I thought we ran the floor particularly well on the offensive side. And I thought we really just hit the open player tonight on offense.”

On Crispness Of Offense
“Well, you've got to give Western some credit, they were really good in help side, giving us a different look than we have maybe seen in practice so far. But I thought our players valued the basketball, I think there were only a couple of poor decisions in terms of making passes that maybe weren't there. Other than that we made great decisions, and when we make good decisions, we're good passers and we can take care of the ball.”

On Play Of Freshmen
“I thought they were a little nervous coming out, but overall they did a fantastic job. I think both Kyleesha (Weston) and Jamee (Swan) showed some really bright things. Kyleesha, playing the one and the two guard, I felt like her and Brittany (Wilson) played well together as the one and the two. I liked Kyleesha's tempo and what she did with the ball. Jamee came in and got some key rebounds and was strong down low. She fouled out, but that is something she will have to learn how to move her feet defensively and how to be in better position.”

On What They Will Work On
“We are going to spend a lot of time on the defensive side of the ball doing some shell drills where the offense is constantly moving. Just being better in help side, seeing both the ball and our man, and making sure we are in the right position. I think are rebounding, we've worked a lot on that in the last week and we need to continue to work on that. I felt like we gave up a few too many offensive rebounds to a smaller team, we really felt like we should have gotten every single defensive rebound. Those are the main things we will focus a lot on the defensive side of the ball. But at the same time we need to keep our offense rolling because we are doing some great things offensively. We have to make sure that we keep progressing as well, because as we go forward we're going to keep seeing better and better defensive teams, and we have to be ready for whatever comes our way.”

Colorado Players

Brittany Wilson, Jr., G
On The Overall Game
“I just took the open shot.  They were open earlier from the three, I was open so I just took it and just ran with it kind of.”

On Team's Ability to Play Without Chucky Jeffery
“I mean we've been prepared.  At practice we have been running through it and our offense has looked really good.  And I think a lot of our offense came from our defense.  Once we got steals and ran in transition, I thought our offense was great.”

Kyleesha Weston, Fr., G
On Her Performance
“I think it was all my teammates, they found me when I was open and they set good screens for me to get me open and pushing the ball down the floor is what I like to do.”

On Her Nerves
“I think I wasn't actually that nervous.  I think it was all nerves in the scrimmage, I got all of those out then.  And to just come out and perform with my teammates was really fun.”

Western State Head Coach Van Girard

On Getting First Game Like Play Out of the Way
“For us, this is actually the first game like situation we have had since we started on the 15th. We weren't able to get in those scrimmages set up because I got on the job late. Basically there was nothing available and we weren't able to get officials to do a scrimmage and get a game like experience prior to this. In the end all I was looking for was three things on how hard we were going to play. I thought we played hard. The second part was that how close we've tried to teach would show up in the game. That was kind of a hit and miss. We would see things good things and a bunch of bad stuff. The third thing was when we stop playing what's the score. So two of the three were positive answers. One showed me a lot of what we still need to do and go home to get better at. It's not a trick route when we lost by 50 points. It's a lesson for us to move forward from. I leave feeling better but, we still have a long hill to climb.”

On What to Take Away from This
“In an exhibition game your hope is that you get a chance to play what you've been teaching. We struggled a little bit. I knew we hadn't had the game experience and I knew we were going to come in and see the arena eyes all big and everything like that. All of that becomes a factor so I still walk away feeling good about some of my players. There are some players that will help us down the road and again this is a lot of lessons for us to get better at. I thought coach was extremely sportsman-like in the way she kept running everybody in and out. I didn't think that in any way, shape, or form that she made any attempt to run up the score. I really appreciate that. It says a lot about the classiness of the head coach here. We tried to compete so I'm okay.”
