Beemer Takes Third At the MPSF Championships

February 25, 2012 | Track and Field

SEATTLE - Junior Brianne Beemer placed third in the pentathlon to lead the University of Colorado on the first day of the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Indoor Track & Field Championships.

Beemer recorded 3,771 points for the bronze-place finish on Friday, bettering her previous personal best of 3,769 points.  She had a solid day's performance, starting off by running the 60-meter hurdles in 9.02 seconds. She followed that up by clearing a height of five feet, 4.5 inches in the high jump and then threw the shot put 34-01.50. Beemer recorded a jump of 17-03.50 in the long jump and finished the day with a first-place finish in the 800, clocking 2:15.04.

Beemer wasn't the only CU combined events athlete who picked up points for the Buffs. Freshman Brittany Lewis placed seventh overall with a personal record of 3,644 points. Lewis ran 9.20 in the 60-hurdles, jumped 5-01 in the high jump and threw 34-10.50 in the shot put. She placed second overall in the long jump with a mark of 18-09, the third best total in CU combined events history, and finished the meet with a time of 2:24.43 in the 800.

"This was a really great opener for us," assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. "To place two women in the pentathlon at our first MSPF conference meet is great."

Colorado head coach Mark Wetmore was also pleased with the performances of Beemer and Lewis on Friday.

"This is Bri's highest finish at conference and she even PR'd," he said. "She had a very solid performance today. Brittany had a moderate accident in the high jump, nearly concussing herself, but she came back and PR'd and scored as a freshman. They did a very good job."

The men's heptathlon ended the first day on a great note with sophomore Jason DeWitt winning the high jump. He cleared 6-08.25 and was the only heptathlete to do so. He came close to getting the next height at 6-09.50, but just nicked the bar causing it to fall down. After four events DeWitt is 16th overall (2,787) and senior Eddie Taylor is 18th (2,650).

"It was fun to watch Jason win the high jump tonight and his final attempt was really, really close," Wetmore said. "It's a great way to end the day of events."

The men's team picked up points from junior Joe Morris and sophomore Alex Kizirian. Kizirian was the first Buff to score points at the MPSF Championships when he took sixth in the weight throw. He recorded a mark of 60-10.50 on his second toss of the meet, which tied for eighth on CU's all-time list.

Morris placed seventh overall in the 200-meter dash, crossing the finish in 21.67 seconds. Morris also advanced to the finals in the 60 after finishing in 6.71 seconds. Morris won his heat of the race, finishing over .13 seconds ahead of Oregon's Dior Mathis (6.84).

"Joe scored in the 200 and will add more points to the team total tomorrow in the 60," Wetmore said. "He had a good day. Alex also had a nice day. It wasn't his best throw of the year, but to come here and earn one of his best throws is good."

The championships will continue on Saturday at Dempsey Indoor. The men's heptathlon 60-meter hurdles, men's shot put and men's high jump will all start at 10:30 a.m.
