T&F Starts Outdoor Season On A Strong Note

March 17, 2012 | Track and Field

BOULDER - The University of Colorado track and field team got their outdoor season started on the right note as several individuals recorded top honors in their respective events at the Potts Outdoor Invitational on Saturday.

Eileen Gehring won a pair of events for the Buffs. She took first place in the 100-meter dash (12.17 seconds) and won the 200, finishing in 24.40. With her time in the 200, she became the eighth fastest Buff in the event, running the fastest time since 1997.

"Eileen is having an excellent freshman year," Colorado coach Mark Wetmore said. "She won two events today and she is among the best performance for the team at this meet. Her races were very good and she is the only person I saw all day who won two events."

The Buffs took the top three positions in the women's 200 as Gehring's teammates placed second and third. Bridget Sweeney was second (25.28) and Lindsy Mattson finished third (25.57).

Brianne Beemer had an outstanding performance in the 400-meter hurdles, taking first with a personal record time of 1:00.12. She was also third in the 100-meter hurdles, clocking a time of 14.42.

"Bri's 400-meter hurdles performance might be the best Colorado performance of the weekend," Wetmore said. "Bri has run in the high 61s, but today she very nearly ran 60 flat in her first 400-hurdles race in eight or nine months. She probably spends about 10 minutes a week training in this event. I think that her time today would already get her to the NCAA preliminary rounds, so it's a race she might need to do a few more times."

The CU men took the top three positions in the 400-hurdles. Kyle MacIntosh won the race, finishing in 52.81 and Tyler Baker was second with a time of 53.36. Adam Salzmann rounded out the trio with a time of 53.67.

The Buffaloes had a good showing from their 4x400-meter relays with both teams picking up first-place finishes. The women's relay, Mattson, Gehring, Lindsey Hubbard and Gehring, won in 3:51.52, while Baker, MacIntosh, Blake Berens and Blake Reimer teamed up on the men's side and won in 3:18.12.

Camille Logan made her 2012 track debut in the 3,000-meter run. She won the race in 9:54.77, besting the runner-up, Kristen Fryburg-Zaitz, by almost 10 seconds (10:04.03). CU's men also had a good showing in the 3k as Dillon Shije was second (8:46.24) and Garret Ward placed third (8:50.97).

"We were pleased with Camille's race," Wetmore said. "She hasn't raced since the NCAA Cross Country Championships in late November; almost four months ago. She ran a little under 10 minutes today, which is what we were hoping. She is in a good position for the longer things to come later in the season."

CU took top honors in the first track events of the day, the men's and women's 3,000-meter steeplechase. Hugh Dowdy won the men's title, crossing the finish in 9:41.80, and Courtney Bouchet won the women's title in 11:14.01. CU took the top four places in the men's race with Jonny Stevens in second (9:42.42), Blake Theroux third (9:44.01) and Cameron Clayton fourth overall (10:04.80). Diana George was second in the women's race. She clocked a time of 12:02.55.

"Those front three guys were all novices in the steeplechase; most haven't spent much time on the event so we were very pleased with them and their performance today," Wetmore said. "They ran the race as more of a workout today than a race attempt. All of them will keep getting better and better as the season continues."

Alex Kizirian did well in the throws, leading CU with a first-place finish in the hammer throw on Friday afternoon. Kizirian recorded a personal best mark of 189 feet, 3 inches on his fourth attempt of the day. The throw tied him for fifth on CU's all-time performers list with Patrick Bachmann and is the best throw by a Buff since 2009. He also placed sixth in the shot put on Saturday with a toss of 48-02.50.

"The hammer is Alex's event," Wetmore said "He threatened the school record in the weight throw this winter and for someone who just picked up the hammer last year as a freshman, he is making some big steps. He has a whole season to keep pushing it out and his throw Friday was a good start."

CU had some good performances in the high jump as well. Mark Jones was the top high jumper for CU, tying for first place. He cleared 6-9 to become the ninth best CU performer. Kelsey English was the top performer on the women's side; clearing 5-5. She tied for second overall.

"I know that Mark is probably not thrilled with anything under seven feet," Wetmore said. "This is his first meet outdoors and there are breezes here and there and different things to get used to. I'm sure this is a good step for him and he will get better meet after meet."

One other performance that stood out for Wetmore was the showing of Emily Hunsucker in the hammer throw on Friday. Hunsucker, who was competing unattached, recorded a personal best with a toss of 191-09.

"Emily may end up redshirting for us, but that was a big throw for her yesterday," Wetmore said. "That mark would probably get her to the NCAA preliminary round if she did that in uniform. It was a great throw for her in the first meet of the season."

The Buffs are off until March 30-31 when the combined event athletes will compete at the Jim Click meet in Tucson, Ariz. Some members of the team will participate in Colorado State's Fum McGraw Quadrangular on March 31 in Fort Collins, Colo.
