Stewart, Morris Awarded Athlete of the Week

March 06, 2012 | General, Track and Field, Women's Golf

BOULDER - CU women's golfer Alex Stewart (sophomore) and men's track and field sprinter Joe Morris (junior) are recognized as CU Athlete of the Week for their athletic performances for the week of Feb. 27 - March 4.

Stewart fired a 5-under par 67 in the final round of the 2012 Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate Golf Championship, capturing medalist honors and leading the Buffs to a second place finish. Just the fifth CU player to win a tournament, her victory is the sixth medalist honor for CU. Stewart's 67 and 5-under par are both tied for the second-best performance in school history, marking the top win by a CU player in terms of strength of the field. Her 5-under par 211 in the three rounds is the fourth best mark in CU history and Stewart became just the ninth CU athlete to go under par twice in a tournament. Her seven birdies in the final round and 14 birdies in the 54-hole event are both tied for the second most in school history. Ranked the No. 94 player entering the tournament, the Elk Grove, Calif. (Homeschooled/Purdue) native bested 27 players ranked higher than herself, including five in the top 20 and the No. 1 player, Duke's Lindy Duncan. After her performance this weekend, Stewart was named the Golf World National Player of the Week.

Morris recorded a second-best time of 6.64 in the 60-meter dash, placing second overall on Friday night at the Arkansas Last Chance meet in Fayetteville, Ark. The time is the second best in CU history, behind Morris' personal best record of 6.63. Advancing to the finals after running 6.66 in the prelims, Morris placed third overall. The Golden, Colo. (Golden/Tennessee) native currently ranks 14th in the NCAA Division I and will more than likely advance to nationals, held this weekend in Nampa, Idaho.

Also nominated for this week's award: Brianne Beemer (track & field), Lexy Kresl (women's basketball), Julyette Steur (women's tennis) and Andre Roberson (men's basketball).

Beemer recorded the second best total in CU pentathlon history, placing sixth at the USATF Indoor Combined Events Championships on Sunday. The (junior) recorded personal bests in four of the five events, including finishing the 60-meter hurdles in 8.96 seconds, throwing the shot put 36 feet, 9 3/4 inches, jumping 17-09 in the long jump and running the 800 in 2:11.71. Her 800 time is the fastest in CU combined events history. Beemer is now the third fastest 800 performer in school history, ranked behind Olympian Mary Decker and current CU teammate Liz Tremblay. Recording 3,960 points at the meet, Beemer recorded almost 200 more points than her previous best of 3,771, set a the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation indoor Championships. Her score is only behind Pam Owen's total of 4,046, which was recorded at the 1993 Big Eight Championships in Amen, Iowa.

Lexy Kresl scored a career-high 20 points, shooting 7-of-10 to help Colorado break a four-game losing streak. Defeating Oregon State in the regular season finale, Kresl sank a Pac-12 season best 6-of-7 from 3-point range. The six 3-pointers were a personal best for Kresl and a team season high. She also matched personal highs with six rebounds and two steals. The 5-foot-11 guard scored 10 points and had three rebounds in the two-point loss to Oregon earlier in the week.

Steur defeated Mia Elmore of Saint Louis, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 3 singles slot in the Buffs' 6-1 team win. Steur teamed with sophomore Kristina Schleich at No. 1 doubles for another 8-4 victory. Losing the other match on day two, CU fell to No. 36 Nebraska. Despite the loss, Steur was the lone CU player to win a match after falling in three sets to Stefanie Weinstein, 2-6, 6-3, 1-0 (8). She has won seven times in 10 matches for the Buffs so far this season.

Sophomore Andre Roberson averaged 13 points, 8.5 rebounds and 1.5 blocks in Colorado's 0-2 week with losses at Oregon (90-81) and Oregon State (83-69).
