CAREER: A two-time All-American, Darby Kiernan is sure to go down in CU history as one of the best. She finished her career on top of six categories in the CU record book: points (287), goals (210), assists (77), draw controls (369), man-down goals (three) and games started (75). Individually, she is the season leader in points (101), goals (70), assists (31), draw controls (159), man-down goals (two) and free-position goals (23). Kiernan also owns four individual game records in points (12), goals (seven), draw controls (19) and free-position goals (four). She played in 76 games for CU and started in all but one. During her time, she was named to the all-conference team three times and was an all-region team member twice. She was named a conference player of the week eight times and earn national player of the week honors four times. At the time of her graduation, she was the only Buff to be named to the Tewaaraton Watch List twice and made the top 25 list in 2018.

SENIOR (2018): Kiernan finished her career at CU with her best season, recording school records with 101 points, 70 goals, 31 assists, 159 draw controls and 23 free-position goals. She tied for first in school history with a pair of man-down goals. Nationally, she was fifth in draw controls (8.00), 11th in goals, 12th in points and points per game (5.05), 13th in free-position goals per game (1.15) and 18th in goals per game (3.50). Kiernan was the only Buff to record at least one goal in every game and had eight games with five or more goals. Her final season started off with five goals in the season opening 20-10 win against Michigan where she also had 11 draw controls. Kiernan earned the first of five Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week honors after recording five goals and 10 draw controls against San Diego State (Feb. 25). Her second award came two weeks later after she helped the Buffs rally to defeat No. 19 Stanford, 18-16, in the Pac-12 opener on March 9. The Buffs were down 12-5 late in the first half when Darby scored her first goal of the game with 2:20 left in the half. She scored four more goals in the second half, guiding CU to its largest comeback in school history. Kiernan also had three assists and nine draw controls. The following game against Cal (March 11) saw Kiernan score six goals. Her weekend performance also garnered national attention as she was named the Brine/US Lacrosse and Alpha Lacrosse National Player of the Week. Kiernan was named the conference offensive player of the week the final three weeks of the season. In the second meeting against Cal (April 15), Kiernan led CU with seven goals and 10 points, which were both career-highs at the time and helped her win the IWLCA National Offensive Player of the Week honor. Four of her seven goals came on free-position attempts, which tied the CU single game record. The Buffs advanced to their second straight NCAA Tournament, defeating Jacksonville 23-18. Kiernan led CU with seven goals, which tied the CU single-game record. That seven goals tied the fifth-most goals in a single-NCAA Tournament game. Kiernan also had five assists, which is tied for ninth in NCAA Tournament single-game history, to give her a career-high 12 points and put her second in NCAA Tournament single game history. Honors followed the attacker throughout the season. Inside Lacrosse named her to the preseason and midseason All-America teams, while she was named to the second team at the end of the campaign. Kiernan was selected to the initial Tewaaraton Watch List and was selected to the top-25 as well. She was named to the All-Pac-12 First Team and was selected to the Pac-12 All-Tournament team. Kiernan earned IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team honors and was named to the IWLCA All-America Second team, recording her second straight IWLCA All-America award in as many years.

JUNIOR (2017): Kiernan had another impressive year as she led the team in points (77), goals (52) and assists (25). She tallied 120 draw controls, which shattered the previous individual season record of 68 and ranked her 11th nationally for draw controls per game (6.00). Kiernan started in all 20 games where she recorded 110 shots with 91 on goal, 16 groundballs and 11 caused turnovers. She led the team in game winning goals (4) and was second for shots and shots on goal.  She scored 20 out of 40 free position shots, the second most on the team, and was 12th in the country for free position goals per game (1.00). The junior was a playmaker all over the field for the Buffs; as an attacker, she had the fifth most caused turnovers on the team (11) and her 77 points ranked her 31st in the nation. Kiernan had 19 draw controls in the win over Stetson on Feb. 19, which broke an MPSF record (15) and tied the fifth best mark in NCAA history at the time. In the days to follow, Kiernan was named MPSF Offensive Player of the Week, CU Female Athlete of the Week and NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Player of the Week (a program first). She followed up with 11 draw controls in the next game against UC Davis on Feb. 26 and added three goals and two assists in the 18-5 victory. Kiernan had a season high seven points (four goals and three assists) against Saint Mary’s on April 21. She also led the team in multi-goal and multi-assist games. She scored five goals four times, had three or more goals in 13 games and had two or more assists in eight games. Kiernan only had one game without any offensive points. She had four goals, one assist and eight draw controls in the game against No. 6 Penn State on March 12 to help the Buffs win their first top-10 road match-up. She recorded a hat-trick in the following games against Winthrop and Oregon, and tallied nine and seven draw controls, respectively. Kiernan powered Colorado’s offense consistently throughout the season, going on a seven-game scoring streak to help the Buffaloes to their first NCAA Tournament. In the first round against Massachusetts on May 12, Kiernan had three goals, two assists, four groundballs and two draw controls. Kiernan earned All-MPSF First Team for the second year in a row, IWLCA All-West/Midwest Region First Team, IWLCA All-American Third Team and Inside Lacrosse Media All-America honorable mention. Kiernan was one of three Buffs to earn the programs first All-American distinctions.

SOPHOMORE (2016): Kiernan built off her strong first year with an even better sophomore campaign, earning first-team all-MPSF honors. She started all 18 games as an attacker, contributing 36 goals, 11 assists, 47 points, 79 shot attempts and 64 shots on goal. She also had 49 draw controls, 21 ground balls and eight caused turnovers, while converting 9-of-18 free-position shots. She led the team in goals, points and shots on goal, was second shots, draw controls and game-winning goals (3), and third in assists. For the season, she ranked fourth in the MPSF and 32nd nationally in free-position percentage (.500); fifth in the MPSF and 92nd nationally in free-position goals per game (0.50); sixth in the MPSF and 107th nationally in goals; sixth in the MPSF and 97th nationally in goals per game (2.00); seventh in the MPSF and 77th nationally in draw controls per game (2.72); and seventh in the MPSF and 141st nationally in points. She opened the season with three goals, an assist, three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers in an 11-10 win at Denver on Feb. 12. She then had four goals in the following game, an 18-4 win at Fresno State on Feb. 21. Kiernan had a season-high six points with four goals and two assists in a 15-3 win over Central Connecticut on March 5, starting a string of four straight multi-goal games. She had a hat trick in a 19-4 win over Marist on March 21 and three goals and an assist in an 11-4 win at Michigan. She had the game-winning goals against CCSU and Marist as well. Kiernan scored twice and had an assist and four draw controls at No. 12/10 Stanford on April 3. She matched a season high with six points with four goals and two assists and attempted a season-high nine shots in a 16-4 win over California on April 17. Her best effort game in the final regular season game on April 24 when she had season highs of five goals and seven draw controls in a 14-9 win at Oregon, stretching her consecutive games with a goal streak to 12. Her five goals tied the school record for goals in a game. Also an excellent student, she earned MPSF All-Academic honors.

FRESHMAN (2015): Kiernan had a strong first season with the Buffs as she led the team in points (62), goals (52), ground balls (37), game-winning goals (4), man-up goals (3) and man-down goals (1). She finished the year second in the MPSF in goals per game (2.89), third in points per game (3.44), and tied for second in game-winning goals, and ranked 20th in the nation in goals per game and 26th in total goals. She played in all 18 games and started in all but one in her inaugural season. Her 90 shot attempts and 73 shots on goal both ranked second on the team. Kiernan made a strong impact on the team and helped lead them to an overall record of 11-7. She also earned MPSF Offensive Player of the Week (March 16), MPSF Rookie of the Week (April 20), MPSF All-Tournament Team, and Inside Lacrosse All-Rookie Team. After going scoreless in her first collegiate game, Kiernan racked up at least one goal in each of the final 17 games, including 15 multi-goal games. Her 10 assists for the year ranked third on the team. She scored her first two career goals in a 13-5 win over Marquette on Feb. 14 and had her first hat trick the following game in a 19-0 win over Presbyterian, as well as her first two career assists for five points. Kiernan scored twice at No. 7 Northwestern, adding four ground balls. She had her second hat trick of the year and assisted on another goal in a 10-9 win over New Hampshire on March 17. Kiernan had her first of three five-goal games and scored the game-winner in a 14-13 double-overtime win at Michigan on March 22, playing a strong all-around game with five draw controls and four ground balls. She had six points after scoring four goals and adding two assists to beat UMass Lowell 17-7 on March 27 and had another four-goal game against Southern California. Kiernan had three straight five-point games late in the year with three goals, two assists and a season-high three caused turnovers against Saint Mary's (Calif.) on April 17, five goals and a season-high six draw controls against California on April 19, and four goals, an assist, and a season-high five ground balls against Fresno State on April 24. Kiernan tied a season-high six points with five goals and an assist in the first round of the MPSF Tournament to top San Diego State 15-6 and scored two goals against No. 15 Stanford in the semifinals to earn her MPSF All-Tournament accolade. She scored the game-winners against Presbyterian, Michigan, Oregon and San Diego State (April 30). For the season, she also totaled 41 draw controls, 37 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.

HIGH SCHOOL: Kiernan excelled on both the lacrosse and soccer fields at Ridgewood. Setting a school record with 240 draw controls, she helped the lacrosse team to a 79-14 record. The Maroons were NJSIAA Group State Champions in 2011 and ’12, NJSIAA Group Section Champions from 2011-13 and Bergen County Women’s Coaches Champions four years running. Kiernan was named the Bergen Record Sophomore of the Year in 2012, earning second-team All-County, All-League and All-Suburban honors. That season she set a school record with 100 draw controls and earned a spot on the School Girls Team 2. An MVP as a junior, Kiernan led the team in draw controls (73), goals (62), ground balls (44) and assists (24). She was also School Girls Team 1 selection. Kiernan earned first-team All-County, All-League, All-North Jersey, All-Suburban and MSG All-Tri State honors her final two seasons, capping her career with a first-team All-America honor as a senior. Her final season, she was the Bergen Record Player of the Year, earning MVP and second-team All-State honors. The 2014 co-captain, she led the team with 97 draw controls, 76 goals, 34 assists and 32 draw controls. Kiernan also competed with the STEPS A Team in club lacrosse for six years. With the Ridgewood soccer team, Kiernan was a three-time NJGSCA Top 20 All-North Jersey and first-team All-State North Sectional selection, leading the team in points each season. She earned three consecutive All Conference Big North Freedom Division first-team honors (first team as a sophomore and senior and second team as a junior). She scored 10 goals and added three assists as a sophomore and had nine goals and five assists as a junior. Her senior year, she was a first-team All-State and All-County selection, scoring 20 goals and contributing nine assists while serving as the team’s co-captain.Â

PERSONAL: Darby Scott Kiernan was born on May 25, 1996 to parents Pete and Stacy Kiernan, who work in aviation sales and real estate, respectively. Her brother Pat played lacrosse at Navy. Her favorite foods are peanut butter and pizza. Her favorite athlete is Lionel Messi, and her favorite book is Fearless. She says she loves everything Colorado has to offer academically, athletically and socially.

She earned three consecutive All Conference Big North Freedom Division first-team honors (first team as a sophomore and senior and second team as a junior). She scored 10 goals and added three assists as a sophomore and had nine goals and five assists as a junior. Her senior year, she was a first-team All-State and All-County selection, scoring 20 goals and contributing nine assists while serving as the team’s co-captain.Â

PERSONAL: Darby Scott Kiernan was born on May 25, 1996 to parents Pete and Stacy Kiernan, who work in aviation sales and real estate, respectively. Her brother Pat played lacrosse at Navy. Her favorite foods are peanut butter and pizza. Her favorite athlete is Lionel Messi, and her favorite book is Fearless. She says she loves everything Colorado has to offer academically, athletically and socially.
