CU Soccer Falls 3-0 At Arizona
November 03, 2013 | Soccer
TUCSON, Ariz. – Last season the University of Colorado soccer team built off of strong road play to take down Arizona 3-0 at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium. This season, the Buffaloes were unable to get their repeat, with the Wildcats getting their revenge in a 3-0 victory of their own here Sunday.
The game remained scoreless at the half, but a strong Wildcat attack helped them to the victory. Arizona outshot Colorado 24-12, and took 12 corners to CU's five. Ten of the Buffs' shots were on goal, with Anne Stuller leading the way with four shots, all on target. In the net, Annie Brunner grabbed a season-high nine saves, but allowed three goals in a game for the third time this season.
The first half was a close battle, and though Arizona took five more shots than CU and held the Buffs to zero corner kicks, the game stayed scoreless at halftime. Arizona picked up the pace in the second half, netting all three of its goals in the final 26 minutes. In four of the Buffs' five losses this season, the Buffs have allowed at least two second half goals, with the one exception being CU's 1-0 loss to No. 2 UCLA last week. Â
In the 64th minute, Hannah Wong rushed from the center, off a cross from Jazmin Ponce, where she found an open look. Wong kicked to the left corner to grab the 1-0 lead. Less than five minutes later, Wong stayed hot on the attack, assisting Julia Glanz off a corner kick to gain the dangerous 2-0 lead. The Wildcats put the game away in the 87th minute, when Alexandra Doller netted her seventh goal of the season.
"They had some chances, but we had some chances in the first half as well," CU head coach Danny Sanchez said. "I think once they got that first goal, we starting to press them a little bit and got exposed. It was a little disappointing to give up that second goal so soon after. We did give ourselves a chance to get back in the game when we were down 2-0. I think their play in the second half was just a continuation of what they were doing in the first half."
With one game remaining for each team, CU looks to keep its NCAA Tournament hopes alive after falling to 12-5-2 overall, 4-4-2 Pac-12 Conference. Arizona snaps a three-game winless streak with the win, improving to 8-7-4, 3-6-1 Pac-12.
"I think Arizona came out with a lot of energy and urgency and really took it to us over 90 minutes," Sanchez said. "Even though it was scoreless at the half, I felt we were second best at the half and we got exposed in the second half. It was a very good result for Arizona for sure."
The Wildcats did a good job of pressing the net in the opening half, outshooting the Buffs nine to four and taking six corner kicks to CU's zero. Following their first corner kick in the fifth minute, Julia Glanz forced a save from Brunner. The Cats were at it again in the ninth minute, with Jazmin Ponce making Brunner grab a save.
The Buffs took their first shot in the 11th minute, with Alex Huynh forcing a save by Gabby Kaufman. Arizona was quick to respond, with a shot by Jaden Degracie off a corner kick going high.
CU spent some time in Arizona territory, and after several touches, Anne Stuller rushed from the right in a one-on-one situation, forcing her shot at the keeper in the 18th minute. The Buffs stayed on offense, with Darcy Jerman rushing the net to force another save in the 21st minute.
The Wildcats then went into attack mode, not allowing another Buffs' shot until the 42nd minute. In the latter 24 minutes of the first half, the Cats took six of their nine shots. Alexandra Doller and Ponce both forced saves from Brunner at the beginning of the offensive frenzy.
In the 33rd minute, Arizona earned a free kick at the center of the field from 25 yards back. The CU wall blocked Glanz's shot, and Brunner was ready to grab the bounce-off. After taking three consecutive corner kicks in just under five minutes, Arizona finally connected on the third, with Brie Defelice forcing another save.
To close the first half, Stuller took a free kick just outside the right edge of the box from 12 yards back, but Kaufman got the save. With just 40 seconds remaining before the break, Lexe Selman connected with a corner kick, but the Buffs' defense came up with the block to keep the game scoreless.
The Buffs' offense found an early stride in the second half, taking two shots and a corner kick in the opening five minutes. In the 50th minute, Brie Hooks got off her first and only shot of the game, hitting at the keeper. CU continued to press, with Madison Krauser getting open at the left post to make Kaufman jump on the save.
Arizona began to really take over in the 59th minute, taking two shots and three straight corners before grabbing the lead at 63:27. The Buffs struggled to get the ball out of their final third, and Wong capitalized, finding an open look that would give her Wildcats' a 1-0 lead.
CU found its time to try to respond, pressing the net and getting Stuller a shot on goal. Following a corner kick, Lizzy Herzl got a shot at the keeper, but Arizona quickly got back on the offensive side of the ball.
Once again, Arizona hit their stride, getting back-to-back corners following shots by Ponce and Hannah Stevens. The Wildcats succeeded on their second set piece, with Glanz netting one off a Wong corner.
Down 2-0, the Buffs looked to get on the board, and came extremely close in the 72nd minute. Huynh took a free kick from 30 yards out, getting her cross to the net. As Kaufman moved up to meet the action, the Buffs looked to score, but an Arizona defender came in for the block on Heather Ward's shot at the net. The Buffs would get two corners, with the first forcing another save.
Though they had their chance, the Buffs were unable to take another shot until after Arizona had put the game away in the 87th minute. As they had done before netting their first two goals, the Wildcats went on an attack at the net before gaining the added insurance. Four different Wildcats would take five shots before Doller found the back of the net to grab the 3-0 lead that would hold for the final 13 minutes of regulation.
"Like I told the team, it's one game," Sanchez said. "It's tough on the road on Sunday, like people know when they come to Boulder. It's just one game. Whether it's 1-0 or 3-0, a loss is a loss. We have to make sure we reenergize ourselves and then get focused on Tuesday morning at practice and get ready for a tough Utah team that's going to be battling for its NCAA lives as well. We just have to come back ready to play next week." Â
The Buffs conclude the regular season with a trip to Salt Lake City. CU faces Utah at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 8. The game will air on the Pac-12 Networks.
