Track & Field Gets Great Start At Holiday Open

December 13, 2013 | Track and Field

USAFA, Colo. —University of Colorado junior Mark Jones got his season off to a brilliant start by winning the high jump at the U.S. Air Force Holiday Open on Friday night, clearing 7-2.25.

The mark tied his career-best, which ranks third on CU's all-time list behind Jason Dudley (7-3.5) and Bill Jankunis (7-3.25). Jones also did well in the long jump, recording a third-place finish with a jump of 22-5.

Mark Jones had a tremendous meet,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “He surpassed the qualifying mark for the U.S. Championships in the high jump. I'm pleased with his progress in these early season meets.”

Eileen Gehring won a pair of events in the sprints in her first meet of the season. She clocked a personal-best of 7.58 in the 60-meter dash and followed up that performance with a time of 38.74 in the 300, a non-traditional event for the Buffs. Her teammate, Lindsy Mattson, placed second in the 300 (39.48) and was sixth in the 60 (7.77).

The men's mile relay also came away with a first-place finish, clocking in a 3:18.39. Individually, Shaw Gifford led the Buffs with a third-place finish in the 60 (6.91) and Jaylyn Mars was third in the 300 (35.14).

Abrianna Torres also had a nice meet. She won the long jump after a leap of 18-6.50 and placed third in the 60-meter hurdles (9.24). Torres earned a personal best in the shot put as well after launching a throw of 42-4.75, which was 1.5 inches further than her previous best (42.3.25).

The Buffs are off until January when they will travel back to the U.S. Air Force Academy for the All-Comers Meet on January, 11, 2014.
