Gehring Leads Buffs At Tyson Invitational

February 08, 2013 | Track and Field

FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. - University of Colorado sophomore Eileen Gehring led the Buffs with a seventh-place finish in the 400-meter dash on the first day of the Tyson Invitational, cruising to the third best time in school history at 54.67.

Gehring finished the sixth section second in 54.67 seconds, becoming the second fastest performer in CU history. The time ranks third behind two times by Leona Russell (54.00, 54.46); both from 1996. She is just the third female Buff to finish the 400 with a sub-55 second time. The only other to do so was Tamara Ards, also in 1996.

Lindsy Mattson also had a good showing in the 400 finishing 27th with a personal best of 55.96. Her time put her fifth on CU's performer's list and was 14th all-time.

Senior Joe Morris advanced to the semi-finals in the men's 60-meter dash, clocking a time of 6.71. He did not move on to the finals as he finished ninth in 6.70, just one position out of the final race. Morris currently is tied in the NCAA with the fastest 60 time this year at 6.57.

Brianne Beemer raced in a pair of events for the Buffs. She started out by running 8.92 in the 60-hurdles, which was 36th overall. But just a little less than an hour later she was back on the track, this time for the 800. Beemer won her section of the race in 2:11.75 and was third overall as two runners finished ahead of her in the second section. It was the second fastest 800 ever for Beemer.

Meanwhile, at the Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash., some distance runners and throwers were also competing for the Buffs. Jana Stolting finished 42nd in the women's 5,000-meter run (17:04.59) and Ryan Savercool placed 65th in the men's 5k with a personal best of 14:46.64.

Kajsa Bank led CU in the weight throw. She placed 36th overall with a toss of 44-11. Kellie Lind was just behind Bank at 38th overall with a throw of 42-11.50. The men's results were not available at the time of this release.

The Buffs will be back in action on Saturday for the second day of the Husky Classic and Tyson Invitational. Some other members of the CU team will compete locally at the Air Force Team Challenge at the U.S. Air Force Academy on Saturday.
