CU-OSU Postgame Quotes
March 09, 2013 | Men's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Tad Boyle
General
"This loss is on me as a head coach; our team
wasn't ready to play emotionally, mentally, and physically. We laid an egg and
that is unfortunate, but it is reality and we have to live with it. I don't
feel sorry for myself or anybody in that locker room except for Shane
Harris-Tunks and Sabatino Chen because they deserve more than what they got out
of today. I told them both that they will get over this because they are both
quality young men, but they will never forget it. Their coach and their
teammates let them down."
On Oregon State's Zone Defense
"It gave us trouble all game and practiced against
it, yesterday we worked against their one-three-one, but we didn't see much of
that tonight, and their two-three they played basically the whole game. We
cannot get by anybody without a ball screen, so we had to come up and set one every
time because we weren't allowed to penetrate the gaps or anything. We couldn't
make plays; our guys were playing scared and tentative. There was not flow
offensively. With that being said, we still could have won the game. At half
time we were up two, we held them to only 37 percent field goal percentage. And
we talked about, 'don't let our laziness and our inefficiencies on offence
translate to our laziness and inefficiencies on defense', and if we just defend
and rebound we can win this game. It may not be pretty, but we can win this
game. But we come out in the second half and they shoot 51 percent and out-rebounded
us by eight. You get what you deserve in life and we deserved what we got
today."
On The Team Not Being Ready
"I am taking the heat on this one. Those dudes in
the locker room are going to take the heat for me, and they already have, but
publically, this is on me."
On Sabatino Chen
"Sabatino gives you everything he has got; there
was a lot of frustration out there. I don't know what Oregon State's game plan
was coming in here but they wanted to slow the tempo down. But usually when a
team plays zone they are playing you zone because they don't think they can
guard you man-to-man. And so you let them off the hook by taking quick jump
shots and by not attacking and moving the ball, and all the things we hope to
do against zones. But Sabatino, in terms of what he gives you, again I will say
it again; him and Shane Harris-Tunks are the epitome of what we want young men
to be as young athletes at the University of Colorado. They are terrific
representatives of our program and I couldn't be more proud of those two guys
and I couldn't feel worse for them right now."
On Xavier Johnson's Emotions
"When things go well Xavier is just fine and when they
don't go well, Xavier has problems; emotionally and mentally, and that is
maturity. Tonight it was a lack of maturity, but it is a process that these
young men half to go through. Pressure breaks pipes and everybody handles it
differently. But Xavier was mentally and emotionally taken out of the game
tonight and that happens when he doesn't have success and that is something he
will have to get better at."
On Recovering From Tonight
"I don't know what they need. But I do know they
need a reality check. The reality check is that we just lost to a team that was
3-14, coming into our building with a great crowd, on senior day, and we got
beat. That is the reality. We better figure it out because the regular season
is over with, it is either win or go home, from here on out. There are no
guarantees of tomorrow."
On Learning From Last Year In The Tournament
"All we know is whoever we play in Las Vegas on a
Wednesday afternoon, we have to beat them to move on, and that is all we know.
I don't know or care who it is, but we are going to approach the Pac-12
tournament just like we did last year. And those guys in the locker room have
to get their heads on right, have to get ready to beat whoever is placed in
front of us. It is not about winning four games in four days, it is about
beating whoever is our first round opponent is and living for another day."
On Loosing At Home
"It makes me sick to my stomach, that our crowd
isn't rewarded more, but loses like today, Arizona State, UCLA is
unacceptable. So it makes me sick to my
stomach that we could not give our fans more than we gave today, they deserve
more than they are getting."
University of Colorado Student-Athletes
Askia Booker, So., PG
On The Lack Of Urgency
"There was no sense of urgency what so ever especially on the defensive end and
that's where you win games and that's the reason why we lost."
On OSU's Roberto Nelson
"He just made big time shots, he's a big
time player. If I'm not mistaken he's the leading scorer in our league. I don't
expect anything less from him but at the same time we gave him open shots
sometimes, and sometimes he made tough shots and that's praise to him."
On The Loss
"It's just a learning process. We did the same thing with Arizona and Arizona
State. We laid an egg against ASU and we laid an egg tonight."
On Their Conference Home Losses
"I'm not really sure. If I'm not mistaken, I think this was our biggest loss at
home by point margin. We're going to make it hard for anyone at home but then
again it comes down to those moments on whose going to get stops and who's not.
I think in all those games when it comes down to the last four minutes of the
game, and you don't get stops, you're going to lose. At the end of the day
that's just how it goes."
On Andre Roberson Being Out
"Regardless if Andre plays we are going to play better with him than we do
without him. Andre is a big asset to our team and hopefully we can get him back
as soon as possible."
Spencer Dinwiddie, So., G
On OSU's 2-3 Zone
"I mean it's a zone, they pack it in, that's what it's designed to do. They
make it hard for you to get dribble penetration and the only way to do that is
if you get the defense distorted and we didn't do that tonight."
On The Starters Limited Playing Time
"It is what it is, you got to support your team. We have a lot of depth and
utmost confidence in our subs. We trust that they can get it done and it's not
just their fault the lead went to what it was. Coach Boyle thought we weren't
doing our job and that's why he put them in in the first place. If we had been
doing our jobs to his satisfaction we would have still been out there."
On The Teams Mentality
"Win the next game. I don't know whether we need to win the tournament or not
that's still up in the air."
Oregon State Head Coach Craig Robinson
On Andre Roberson's Absence
"We try to not fall
into the trap of worrying about a guy that isn't playing. I find that when you
know a guy isn't playing, you tend to play poorly because you know he's not
going to be in there. I didn't want to worry about Andre not being there. We
saw this team [Colorado] beat a really good team [Oregon] without Andre. That's
what we were setting up for. We were just acting like Andre might be there. It
was a game time decision so we didn't know if they were going to play him or
not. This season has been tough for us and really we just spend our time
worrying about ourselves."
On Getting A Win Before The
Pac-12 Tournament
"Last year we sort
of did the same thing. I remember telling the guys in there that we started our
win streak too early. Maybe they listened to me because we started a little
later so that we could win more games in the tournament."
On Oregon State Guard Roberto
Nelson
"Roberto does a lot
for us. He is a terrific player and he does a lot of different things. Tonight
I thought was one of his better games. Even though he didn't score in the first
half, he helped us get going. He helped other guys get going. It was fantastic
to watch him make plays out there. He let his offense come to him in the second
half. That's the sign of a guy that really knows the game. He's got a high basketball
IQ and he cares about his teammates. He's smart enough to know what it takes to
win a big game on the road. I thought he could have gotten to the line a few
more times and the game was quite physical. He didn't let that bother him. We
need that level of toughness."
On Getting A Road Win In A Tough
Environment
"I told them that
this place is going to be the hardest place to play in the Pac-12. We wanted to
let the guys in the locker room know that if you can win here, you can win
anywhere. I tried to do a little reverse psychology. I told them how hard it
was to play here hoping that they would raise the level of play."
On Shutting Down Colorado's Spencer
Dinwiddie and Josh Scott
"It was focus. In order to win games on the road,
you can't let their good guys get going. It was a real team effort and it was
guys rebounding and covering for each other. I was very, very proud of these
guys - it was a very good win."
