Gillam, Austin Named CU Athletes of the Week

BOULDER- Volleyball's Alexis Austin and football's Addison Gillam, were awarded with CU Athlete of the Week honor's for their play during the week of August 26-September 1.
Austin led the Buffs to a 1-1 record to start the season against St. Mary's (Calif.) at the Omni Hotels Colorado Volleyball Classic. She recorded 11 kills on Friday night and then hammered a team high 13 on Saturday night. Austin averaged 3.00 kills per set and hit .194 in the two matches. She also recorded seven digs and five blocks assists on the weekend. The Buffs dropped the first match on Friday night, 1-3, but came back Saturday night to take the Gaels 3-1. St. Mary's was receiving votes in the AVCA Coaches Preseason Poll.
Gillam, who came from Palo Cedro, Calif., became just the second true freshman to start a season opener at inside linebacker in CU history. He controlled the Rocky Mountain Showdown against CSU where he recorded 14 tackles (7 solo), with one tackle for a loss and a quarterback sack. He also contributed a pass break-up, three third down stops and one fourth down stop as he played a vital role within the defense, which limited CSU to under 300 total yards (295).
Colorado held CSU to 27 points, after last season's average of 46 points allowed per game, CU is now 1-0 under new head coach Mike MacIntyre, and play Central Arkansas this Saturday.
Also nominated for this week's award were soccer's Brie Hooks, and cross country's Catrina McAlister and Connor Winter.
Brie Hooks continued to score, scoring both of the goals for the Buffs in Sunday's match against St. Mary's. Hooks, who now has 5 total goals on the season, recorded her second multi-goal game of the year. She joins an elite group of Lady Buffs, becoming one of five to have recorded at least two multiple goal games in a single season. She joins Nikki Marshall who recorded 3 seasons of multi-goals games, Katie Griffin, Anne Stuller and Fran Munnelly. She is also tied with Melissa Cartmell for fifth on the freshmen goals list. Hooks has two game-winning goals this season, which has helped the Buffs to a program best 4-0 start.
CU won Friday's match against Air Force, 2-0 with a pair of goals from Anne Stuller.
McAlister was the top female finisher to cross the line at the CU time trial on Saturday, finishing in 22:16. The Buffs ran the time trial in a pack and as a team tradition allowed the youngest member of the team, who had kept up with the lead pack, to cross first, which were freshmen Melanie Nun and Erin Clark, both who were racing unattached.
Winter was the first Buff in uniform to finish at the time trial, finishing third at a time of 26:20. As the same with the women Buffs, the men ran the time trial in a pack, in which were freshmen Ben Saarel and Zach Perrin, both who were racing unattached.
