Colorado-California Quotes

January 11, 2014 | Women's Basketball

Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe

General

“Well, I'll give Cal credit; they kept playing, they did not give up at any point in time, they were aggressive, they were tough down the stretch and they really fought. They're well-coached; they executed their offense and forced turnovers [on defense]. I'm pretty disappointed with how that [the game] turned out. We didn't show up; we didn't have a sense of urgency when we needed to and really, that was difference in the game.”

On Why Such a Lack of Urgency

“I don't [know]. We haven't had a good sense of urgency all year though, and we've had it very, very sparingly. Not understanding when we need to have a sense of urgency and I was screaming and yelling from the sideline to get into a stance and that we needed a stop. We just didn't have leadership on the floor and I think that is a big part about it [lack of urgency]. You need somebody to step up and somebody to recognize that you need a stop and say here's how we're going to do it. We didn't have that on the floor. Ashley [Wilson's] our captain, but when she's not on the floor, she can't help us out.”

On G Afure Jemerigbe Game-Winning Lay-Up

“We knew they were either going to go to their post players or go to her [Jemerigbe]. We put Haley Smith in because she was a little bit bigger defender, and she [Jemerigbe] was driving right at Lexy [Kresl] probably the previous two or three possessions. Most of her [Jemerigbe] points came in the last three minutes of the game. But you have to give her [Jemerigbe] credit; she plays 37 minutes and she has enough energy and perseverance to drive it right at us.”

On Difficulty Bouncing Back for Stanford on Sunday (1/12)

“Well, it better not be too difficult at all. We have to bounce back; you don't have a choice when you play Cal and Stanford on the same weekend. You have to bring it for two games and I thought we brought it for about 36 minutes tonight, but it wasn't enough and Stanford is even tougher. If you are feeling sorry for yourself come practice time tomorrow and aren't ready to go, Stanford will take advantage of that. We don't have a choice but to get ready and understand that we have a huge task ahead of us.”

On Loss Associated With Final Minutes

“Towards the end when we needed to stop, we didn't step up to that challenge. They scored a few times at the end and we didn't. I'd say they beat us in the last three minutes.”

On Handling Pressure and End Game Strategy

“We had more turnovers than we would have liked obviously, but once we figured it out and attacked it, we got some good points off of it and some good possessions. Other than that, we sped up a little bit too much. I think we were looking for Arielle [Roberson] and we had a down screen on the other side with Jen [Reese] and Jasmine [Sborov]. We were looking to see what we could get out of that obviously because Arielle [Roberson] was the hot player for the game. We were just trying to get her the ball.”

On Reasons For Being Out Of Sync

“I think after we broke the press we did a good job of breaking it. We just needed to settle back in and execute our offense. We kind of got a little unorganized at times, but I think it was more us. I didn't feel rattled, and I don't think really we felt rattled. We just didn't play to win necessarily. They were the aggressors, and we didn't buck up to that challenge, as Lexy [Kresl] said.”

On Locker Room Emotions

“[There was] definitely a lot of disappointment and frustration. We have to learn to play a lot better and take it to them. Coach was saying they were taking a lot of shots at us and we were taking it, but we got to give them back. I think that's kind of how our defense is. At times we're good, they started amping the pressure up on their defense and then we start to lose it offensively and come back on defense just like we played offense. We have to get better at that.”

On Bouncing Back From Los Angeles Trip

“Yeah, I think I was better mentally. That was the biggest difference. I just forgot about what happens in the past and I said, 'This is a new game, and this is a new day, so just leave it there.' I was definitely a lot more aggressive and I think as a team, we were more aggressive than we were in California for that trip. I think it wasn't just me it, was everybody.”

On Difficulty Bouncing Back For Stanford Game

“I think it's not very difficult at all. I'm pretty pissed off. I think we can use that, learn from this game, and continue to compete the whole forty minutes. We need to push through. I think we can use that against Stanford. A lot of teams get mad when they come off of a loss and they take it out on the next team. I think we have to do that against Stanford.”
