Lewis Takes Fifth In AFA Invite Pentathlon

USAFA, Colo. —Sophomore Brittany Lewis led the University of Colorado combined events athletes on Thursday at the Air Force Invitational with a fifth-place finish in the pentathlon.

Lewis recorded a score of 3,613 points and led the Buffs in four of the five events. She started off the day by running a time of 8.98 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, before throwing the shot put 31 feet, 10 inches. Lewis led CU with a leap of 18-10.75 in the long jump and ran a strong 800 in 2:26.79. She also cleared 5-1 in the high jump.

Sophomore Ewelina Pena had the best high jump for the Buffs after clearing 5-4.50. She finished 11th overall with a personal best score of 3,205. Pena's other marks were 9.67 in the 60-hurdles, 30-7.50 in the shot put, 16-4 in the long jump and 2:37.05 in the 800.

Freshman Mariah Slack placed 18th overall in the pentathlon with 2,886 points. She ran 10.63 in the 60-hurdles and 2:34.10 in the 800. Slack also jumped 5-1 in the high jump and 16-4.75 in the long jump. Her mark in the shot put was 26-8.25.

New Mexico Highland's Salcia Slack won the pentathlon with a score of 3,844.

On the men's side, senior Jason DeWitt is currently sixth in the heptathlon competition with a day one score of 2,855. He ran 7.41 in the first event of the day, the 60, before jumping 20-11.75 in the long jump. DeWitt made CU history when he recorded a personal record of 42-5.50 in the shot put, breaking the former CU heptathlon shot put record of 40-4 by more than two feet. He finished his day with a jump of 6-5.50 in the high jump.

BYU's Chase Dalton is the day one leader of the heptathlon with 3,238 points.

“Collectively the team had a solid overall performance,” assistant coach Lindsey Malone said. “We had several personal records including Jason's enormous new heptathlon shot put record. I'm happy with the team dynamic and the progress each athlete is making. There are still many technical gains to accomplish over the weeks to come and we are ready to get back to work.”

The Air Force Invitational will continue Friday and Saturday, January 23-24.
