Soccer Falls 3-0 To No. 4 Stanford

October 16, 2014 | Soccer

STANFORD, Calif. – In the final road match of the season, the University of Colorado women's soccer team fell 3-0 to No. 4 Stanford on Thursday night.

Colorado is now 10-5 overall and 3-3 in the Pac-12 Conference. Stanford improves to 12-1-2 and 4-1-1 in conference play.

"Stanford is very good and deserving of their ranking so I knew today would be a challenge for us," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "The big picture we can take some positives from this game. We played well in stretches and I liked our competitiveness through the 90 minutes."

CU fell behind when Stanford's Taylor Uhl scored her first goal of the season to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead just before halftime. In the 38th minute, Chioma Ubogagu sent the ball to Uhl from outside the box. Uhl was 8 yards off the line and headed the ball into the right side of the net, just out of the reach of goalkeeper Kate Scheele.

Colorado was held without a shot in the first half and trailed 1-0 at halftime. It was only the third time this season that the Buffs were down at the break.

In the 59th minute, midfielder Lo'eau LaBonta made it 2-0 in favor of the Cardinal when she dribbled the ball around a couple Colorado defenders and launched a hard-driving shot past Scheele's right side. It was LaBonta's second goal of the year and Megan Turner earned the assist, recording her second of the season.

Colorado, up against one of the nation's top defenses, was limited to a season low four shots and only one on goal. One of the Buffs' best scoring opportunities of the night came in the 77th minute. Stanford's goalkeeper was out of position and junior Kahlia Hogg headed the ball toward the goal. Unfortunately, the Buffs could not catch a break as Cardinal defender Andi Sullivan was there to clear the ball, heading it over the crossbar.

"We knew we weren't going to get a lot of looks," said Sanchez. "We didn't do enough in the final third, but I think that's more of a product of Stanford playing well than anything."

Stanford would add its final goal at the 88:17 mark.

Despite allowing three scores, the Buffs' defense held Stanford to only four shots on goal in the match.

Colorado finishes the five-match road trip 3-2 and 4-2 overall away from Prentup Field this season, recording three more road victories than last year when the Buffs went 1-3-2.

The Buffaloes return home on Friday, Oct. 24 to face Washington State at 3 p.m. MT. Colorado will play its final five matches of the regular season on its home pitch.

"The last five teams we play are all very good teams," said Sanchez. "We know those are going to be challenges, but I'm pleased with this road trip and how we competed and the results that we got. We're looking forward to getting back to Prentup [Field] and playing in front of our fans. Washington State is a very good team, a team that will be in the NCAA tournament so it will be another tough match-up for us."

Breast Cancer Awareness
Colorado will wear pink in Friday's match against Washington State as part of breast cancer awareness month. Help the Buffs lace up in the fight against breast cancer as the first 300 fans to the game will receive a free pair of pink CU shoelaces.
