Soccer Drops Tough Match To No. 24 Washington State
October 24, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – In a tough battle against No. 24 Washington State, the University of Colorado women's soccer team fell 2-1 on Friday afternoon at Prentup Field.
The Buffs, playing at home for the first time in nearly a month took an early 1-0 advantage behind forward Brie Hooks' team-leading sixth goal of the season. Forward Maddie Krauser carried the ball from midfield, she made a few moves around a couple Washington State defenders and sent the ball into Hooks. From the right side of the box, Hooks' shot bounced off the left goal post into the back of the net at the 29:48 mark.
Washington State answered with the equalizer in the closing minutes of the first half. In the 41st minute, Cara Wegner scored her first goal of the year to tie the match at 1-1. The Cougars' Jocelyn Jeffers played a through ball to Wegner as she entered the box. Wegner was able to work around Colorado goalkeeper Kate Scheele to find the back post.
"Collectively it wasn't enough today," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "Washington State is a very good team. We scored a good early goal, but it was disappointing to give that one up at the end of the first half."
After halftime, Washington State's Kaitlyn Johnson scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 50th minute. Kailiana Johnson and Kourtney Guetlein picked up the assists as Johnson drilled the ball past Scheele for her second goal and second game-winner of the 2014 campaign.
"Washington State is a good team," said Hooks. "They were playing tough and gave us a good game, playing the entire time."
The Buffs would continue to fight, recording eight of their 12 shots and three corner kicks in the second half of play, but were unable to find the tying goal before time expired.
"Once we got down that goal, it's just tough to score goals in this league and we didn't do enough over the 90 minutes," Sanchez said. "We had some stretches for sure, but we didn't do enough."
Colorado falls to 10-6-0 and 3-4-0 in Pac-12 play. Washington State extends its unbeaten streak to three matches and improves its overall record to 9-2-3 and 4-2-1 in conference action.
Friday's match was the fifth meeting between the two programs and Washington State leads the series 4-1.
The Buffs will regroup and prepare to face the 18th-ranked Washington Huskies on Sunday, Oct. 26.
"Right now it's all about recovery," said Sanchez. "Washington is every bit as good, if not better so we have to get back at it tomorrow morning and get ready for Sunday."
Kickoff is set for 1 p.m. MT at Prentup Field.
