Buffs Battle No. 18 Washington To Scoreless Draw
October 26, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team fought to a 0-0 draw against No. 18 Washington in a tight double-overtime match on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
Colorado (10-6-1, 3-4-1 Pac-12) snapped its two-match skid with the draw and Washington (12-4-1, 5-2-1 Pac-12) extended its unbeaten streak to six matches.
Goalkeeper Kate Scheele made a critical save during the second overtime to prevent Washington from scoring the game-winner. The Huskies' Shannon Simon sent a cross from the left side and forward Jaclyn Softli headed the ball near the back post, but Scheele had the driving save.
"The big picture is that we needed to get something today and I'm really pleased with how we bounced back," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We didn't play poorly against Washington State [on Friday]. There were just a couple moments where we broke down. Today, defensively, we were great. Kate [Scheele] made the save she needed to make at the end of the game and they were tired, but we were tired at the end. I felt that we were really pushing at the end in over time to get that win. It's a fair result over 110 minutes."
The Buffaloes had 13 shots and four on goal with sophomore Brie Hooks leading the charge, recording two of her four shots on frame and senior Darcy Jerman had three shots.
Hooks had a scoring opportunity in the 38th minute for the Buffs with an open net in front of her as Washington's goalkeeper Megan Kufeld came out to attack the ball. Hooks sent her shot on frame, but unfortunately it was just a bit too high and hit the top of the crossbar before rolling over the net.
Colorado also had another chance late in regulation off a free kick. In the 81st minute, junior Kahlia Hogg launched the ball toward the left side and with a swarm of players crowding the box, Tori Cooper crossed the ball back to the right side, but it was just out of the reach of Olivia Pappalardo at the post before the ball rolled past the end line.
The Buffs defense turned in a solid a performance, holding the Huskies to 11 shots and did not allow any easy looks.
"It was a team effort," said Scheele. "Our defense came out today and really stepped up our level. The communication was great, we worked as a unit and it's always great for me to have that support from the defense and I had it today. There is no second you can take off, especially as defenders. There are chances that people get from missed clears and bad situations. That didn't happen today. We were focused 100% and that showed."
Scheele recorded eight saves and earned her eighth shutout of the year, the fourth-best single-season total in program history.
Washington's Kate Bennett had a team-leading five shots for the Huskies and Kufeld tallied four saves.
Sunday's contest was only the second time Colorado played extra time this season and the third consecutive match the Buffs faced a ranked opponent. Colorado is 1-4-1 against top 25 teams this year.
CU is 6-3-1 at home in 2014 and returns to Prentup Field on Friday, Oct. 31 to face Arizona State at 3 p.m. MT and then will play Arizona on Sunday, Nov. 2 at noon MT.
On Friday, join the Buffs for kick-or-treat with the first 300 fans receiving a reusable CU trick or treat bag. Fans are also encouraged to wear their Halloween costume for a chance to win various prizes. On Sunday, the first 300 fans in attendance will receive a coupon for a $1 hot dog.
