Buffs Shut Out Arizona State 2-0

October 31, 2014 | Soccer

BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team shut out its 10th opponent of the season, defeating Arizona State 2-0 on Friday afternoon at Prentup Field.

The Buffs improve to 11-6-1 and 4-4-1 in Pac-12 play. The Sun Devils have dropped three straight and fall to 9-5-4 and 2-4-3 against conference opponents.

"Every win in the Pac-12 this year, there's no freebies," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez, who earned his 300th career victory on Friday. "At home, we need to take care of business and I felt that the early start really helped us."

Colorado played with a lead from the fourth minute on when Olivia Pappalardo scored her first goal of the season to put the Buffs in front. Sophomore Brie Hooks was positioned inside the goal box and had a beautiful pass to Pappalardo who split the defenders and put a finishing touch on the ball, sending it past Arizona State goalkeeper Chandler Morris for the 1-0 advantage. It was Hooks' team-leading fifth assist and Pappalardo is now one of 10 Buffaloes to have at least one goal this year.

"Scoring that early keeps them on their heels the whole game and they're the ones chasing," said Pappalardo. "Especially a team that's coming to altitude, they're going to get tired and having to chase the whole game helped us."

Hooks would give the Buffs a bit more breathing room at the 74:47 mark when she added the second goal. Senior Darcy Jerman won the ball at midfield and passed it to a speedy Hooks down the right side. Hooks, too fast for ASU's backline nailed her shot top shelf to make it 2-0. It was the seventh goal for the Maple Valley, Wash. native and Jerman's career-high fourth assist.

"We want to come out this weekend and hopefully get six points so to start out the weekend with a win like that and with how well the whole team played, it was really good," said Hooks.

Colorado had 11 shots to Arizona State's 12 and each squad put five shots on frame. The Buffs' defense turned in another stellar performance, averting pressure and not allowing the Sun Devils to get comfortable in the attacking third.

Arizona State threatened to score in the 71st minute. The Sun Devils switched the field and Cali Farquharson sent a shot on goal from the right side, but CU goalkeeper Kate Scheele made the save to keep the shutout in hand. Scheele was credited with five saves and has nine clean sheets this year, tying her for second most all-time in a single season.

"The back four were awesome. Brooke [Rice], Tori [Cooper], Bianca [Jones] and Kahlia [Hogg] played 90 minutes again, rock solid," said Sanchez. "Kate [Scheele] dealt with the stuff that she had to deal with, but we did a great job with Cali Farquharson and Aly Moon who's a very talented freshman…The early goal really gave us confidence and really put them under some pressure."

Friday's victory marked the first time the Buffaloes have defeated Arizona State in program history, now holding a 1-4-1 record against the Pac-12 foe.

Colorado returns to the pitch to face the Arizona Wildcats on Sunday, Nov. 2 at noon MT for its fourth match of the five game homestand. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a coupon for a $1 hot dog.

Notable:
  • The win is the Buffs first victory at home against a conference opponent this year and are 7-3-1 overall at Prentup Field
  • Hooks earned three more points, tying her for second all-time among sophomores with 19 in one season, she only needs two more to break the school record
