Buffs Defeat Arizona For 12th Win Of The Season
November 02, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – The University of Colorado women's soccer team defeated Arizona 3-1 on Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field behind goals from three different Buffaloes.
Colorado, unbeaten in its last three matches improves to 12-6-1 (5-4-1 Pac-12) and Arizona falls to 10-6-2 (4-5-1 Pac-12).
"It's huge for us," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "We geared for this last five game home stretch. It's why you do all of the work. Playing on Sunday, it's difficult and I think it was a huge result for us. Over the 90 minutes, I think we deserved it."
The Buffaloes started in a similar fashion to Friday's match, grabbing an early 1-0 lead. In the sixth minute, Colorado was awarded a penalty kick after junior Madison Krauser was fouled inside the goal box. Senior Darcy Jerman stepped up and buried her shot in the top right corner to record her fourth goal of the year, a single-season career high. The forward from Colorado Springs, Colo. has successfully converted both of the Buffs' penalty kicks in 2014.
The Buffs maintained their one goal advantage at halftime where they are a perfect 7-0 this season when leading after one period.
CU would add two more goals in the second 45 minutes of action. Freshman Brittney Stark extended the Buffs' lead in the 53rd minute. Sophomore Brie Hooks carried the ball over the midfield line down the right side of the field. Stark was out in front and received the pass in a one-on-one situation. She beat the defender and was all by herself in front of Arizona goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman. Kaufman came off the line to attack the ball, but Stark made a move around her and found the back of the net for her third goal of the year and Hooks' tallied her second assist in as many matches. The Maple Valley, Wash. native leads the team with six assists this season.
The Wildcats made it 2-1 at the 71:48 mark when they also scored their first goal of the match on a penalty kick. Colorado was called for a hand ball inside the 18-yard box. Gabriela Stoian took the shot and put the ball past Kate Scheele inside the left post.
On the counter attack, junior Madison Krauser found the touch in the closing minutes to put Colorado up by two goals once again. In the 88th minute, forward Emily Paxton had the ball on the right side and switched the field, sending her pass to Krauser on the left side. Krauser outran the Arizona defense and shot the ball from inside the goal box to record her second goal of the year, making it 3-1.
"It was a great ball," said Krauser. "I just had to run on the tail end of it…It was great to get it. I've been really looking to get a goal lately because it's been a while."
It was the first time this season Colorado scored three goals against a Pac-12 opponent and only second time since joining the Pac-12 Conference with the other time coming in 2012 when the Buffs defeated Arizona 3-0 in Tucson, Ariz.
The Colorado defense continued its strong play holding Arizona to nine shots and Scheele was credited with four saves.
"Once again, the back four, I can't say enough: Brooke [Rice], Tori [Cooper], Bianca [Jones], and Kahlia [Hogg]," said Sanchez. "Ninety minutes again, rock solid. Kate [Scheele], besides the PK, dealt with what she had to deal with so it was a great job. The player that doesn't get a lot of credit is Morgan Stanton, the front center, middle front, once again 90 minutes. It was a great defensive team effort."
Colorado will face Utah at home on Friday, Nov. 7 for its final match of the regular season. The contest begins at noon MT and will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
Notable: Colorado is 8-3-1 at Prentup Field this season and 11-1 when scoring first…Stark's goal was her first career game-winner…Hooks recorded her 20th point, tying her for first all-time in points as a sophomore…it is the first time in program history that CU has won five Pac-12 Conference matches.
