Buffs Fall In NCAA Second Round, 1-0 To UNC In Overtime

November 21, 2014 | Soccer

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The University of Colorado soccer team's season ended on Friday evening after falling 1-0 in overtime to No. 6 North Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Buffaloes and Tar Heels played to a scoreless tie through the first two periods and then North Carolina's Maya Worth tallied the game-winner less than five minutes into overtime. Worth scored the goal off her own rebound after it was initially set-up by teammate Danae O'Halloran. O'Halloran crossed the ball inside the box and Worth headed it toward Colorado's goal. A Buffalo defender was in position to deflect it away, but the ball ended up back at the feet of Worth and she sent her shot into the right side of the net to give UNC the victory.

"I'm really proud of what we did, it just wasn't enough at the end," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez. "I think they [North Carolina] are everything we thought they would be and maybe a little bit more. A tough game, but that's soccer."

The Buffaloes were limited to only two shots in the match as the North Carolina defense would not allow the Buffs to get much of anything going on the attack. Colorado had its best opportunity to score in the 29th minute when junior Madison Krauser had control of the ball down the right side and launched a shot from inside the box, but the Tar Heels' first half goalkeeper Bryane Heaberlin was in position to make the save.

Senior Darcy Jerman recorded the other shot for Colorado just minutes into the second period at the 48:13 mark. Sophomore Brie Hooks had possession on the right side and she found Jerman in stride, running down the center of the field. Jerman booted the ball toward the goal, however it landed right into the hands of North Carolina's second goalkeeper Lindsey Harris. Harris replaced Heaberlin in the net after halftime.

"I think it's a learning experience for us," said Sanchez. "We play teams of this caliber in our conference and the games are usually similar type results, but I think today we definitely defended a little bit too deep and did not have enough confidence going forward with the ball especially when we're fresh and had opportunities. I think Madi [Krauser] and Brie [Hooks] are very dangerous. They work well together. We didn't give them enough support going forward today, but once again that's due to North Carolina."

Colorado's defense sustained a lot of pressure by the North Carolina offense in the opening minutes and throughout much of the contest to hold the Tar Heels in check through 90 minutes. UNC had 22 shots in the contest with six on frame. In the first half, the Tar Heels recorded nine shots, but only one was on goal after the Buffs' backline blocked five of North Carolina's first seven attempts.

CU goalkeeper Kate Scheele was credited with six saves and made one of her best of the night in the 55th minute. North Carolina's Amber Munerlyn had a shot from inside 18 yards and Scheele made a great jump to push the ball over the crossbar and kept it from going in.

Colorado finished the season with a 14-7-1 record. The Tar heels (13-3-2) advance to the third round for a 33rd straight year and will host South Carolina on Sunday at Fezter Field.

It was the first time Colorado had reached the Round of 32 in back-to-back seasons since 2006-07.

"It's tough to get to these levels," Sanchez said. "There are a lot of good teams that do not ever get to these levels and play in these games. You have to put yourself in a position to get here and we did that, so the next step now is to play better when we're in these moments."

Notable: Colorado finished with a 4-3 record on the road and was 2-5-1 against ranked opponents…Friday's match was only the second postseason overtime contest for the Buffs in program history…4,211 people attended the match, making it the largest crowd Colorado has played in front of in an NCAA tournament, breaking the previous record of 1,998 in 2004 at Portland…CU went 4-1-1 over its last six matches.
