KONA, Hawaii – The University of Colorado women's golf team finished in 10th place at the Pac-12 Preview on Tuesday to conclude its fall season. The 54-hole tournament held at the 6,392-yard, par 73 Nanea Golf Club included some fierce competition for the Buffaloes as five of the 12 teams rank 13 or higher in the latest Golfstat poll.
“It wasn't our week,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “We had a goal of playing the par 5s better today and we accomplished that, but unfortunately struggled on other holes.”
The Buffs shot an identical score in all three rounds to post a 45-over par (307-307-307—921) final mark. There was little movement in the leaderboard on the last day, with the top four teams remaining the same from Monday. No. 6 Washington, the only squad to card a sub-par finish won the tournament at 11-under. The seventh-ranked UCLA Bruins took second at even-par, No. 3 Stanford was 7-over to finish third and No. 13 Arizona went 13-over, to take fourth place. Rounding out the top five at 16-over par was No. 32 Arizona State, who climbed three spots in round three, the biggest move among any team and No. 2 Southern California.
Freshman Brittany Fan continued to lead the Buffs through the final 18 holes and moved up five spots to tie for 17th. Fan posted an even third round to finish 73-77-73—223 or 4-over par. She started out at 1-under with a birdie, but ran into a bit of some trouble on the next two holes with back-to-back bogeys. Fan settled down nicely after that to record three more birdies on the afternoon and finished strong, paring the final four holes. The Pearl City, Hawaii native has now had two top 25 performances this season, including a 14th place finish at the Minnesota Invitational.
Junior Alexis Keating (77-76-80—233) and sophomore Esther Lee (79-75-79—233) struggled in the final round as both finished 14-over and tied for 41st overall. Lee fell three spots from the second to third round, shooting 6-over par. She started out strong, going 1-under through her first 11 holes, but had a difficult time closing it out. Over the next four holes she recorded two bogeys, one triple and one double. Keating opened her round with two consecutive double-bogeys and would remain 4-over through 12. She also had a rough finish, bogeying three of her last six to post 7-over par in round three.
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi shaved one stroke off her final round and completed the fall season tied for 48th with a 78-79-78—235 or 16-over par. She was 3-over until double-bogeying the last hole to put her at 5-over par for the day. Although it was a difficult finish, she pared 12 holes, the most out of any of her three rounds and recorded one birdie.
Junior Jamie Oleksiew had a bogey right out of the gate and a double-bogey on the last hole as she carded an 80-83-77—240, 21-over par final score. She had four bogeys and the one double on Tuesday, but had two of her four birdies of the tournament in the third round. Oleksiew finished 56th overall.
UCLA's Alison Lee shot 10-under, edging out Washington's SooBin Kim by one stroke to win the meet. Kim's teammate Charlotte Thomas took third place with a 4-under par scorecard. Lauren Kim from Stanford moved up eight spots from the second to third round for a fourth place finish at 2-under, 217, while Oregon's Caroline Inglis and Arizona's Lindsey Weaver, both 1-under placed fifth.
The Pac-12 Preview was the last tournament for the Buffaloes on their fall schedule. Colorado returns to action on February 14, 2015 when they open spring play at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford, Calif.
“It's a tough way to finish the fall, but this is a good bunch of players and we will work to have a successful spring,” said Kelly.
