Buffs Open Spring In Seventh At Peg Barnard Invite
February 14, 2015 | Women's Golf
STANFORD—The University of Colorado women's golf team opened its spring season Saturday, sitting tied for seventh place after the first round of the Peg Barnard Invitational here at the Stanford Golf Course. The Buffs are tied with Gonzaga at 18-over par 302.
UC Davis is in the lead and the only team under par at 1-under 283 on the par-71, 6,084-yard course. Oregon sits in second place at 8-over 292 while San Jose State and Stanford are tied for third one shot back at 9-over 293 and Cal rounds out the top five with an 11-over 295. There is then another cluster of teams as the difference between sixth place (Nevada) and 11th place (San Francisco) is just five shots.
“We were a little rusty today, we had some putting issues today and that kind of thing,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “Overall today was not a great day, but the team has been practice well, we just have to get our tournament legs under us.”
Sophomore Esther Lee led the Buffs with a 2-over par 73 and sits tied for 14th, just three shots out of the top five and four shots out of second place. She began her spring season at 5-over par through her first 12 holes but then caught fire down the stretch with three birdies in the final five holes of the day.
Junior Alexis Keating shot a 3-over par 74 and is tied for 18th place, still very much in the mix, as well. Starting on No. 15, she started with a bogey but immediately birdied to get back to even par. After making the turn to the front nine, she bogeyed No. 1 and then had a bogey-birdie combo on Nos. 5-6 to remain at 1-over. Three bogeys in five holes rounding to the back nine put her at 4-over and she was able to birdie her final hole to finish the round at 3-over par.
Freshman Brittany Fan shot a 5-over par 76 and is tied for 28th place. She opened with a pair of pars before a bogey on No. 15. A birdie on No. 4 put her back to even par but she then had a bogey on No. 1, double on No. 4 and bogey on No. 5 to move to 4-over 11 holes into her round. She settled down shooting 1-over on the final seven holes with one bogey and six pars.
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi finished with an 8-over par 79 and is tied for 53rd. Starting on No. 16, she pared to open her round, then had three straight bogeys making the turn to the front nine. A birdie on No. 3 and two pars put her at 2-over through eight holes. She had six pars in the final 10 holes with two bogeys and a pair of double bogeys to finish at 8-over.
Junior Allie Zech shot a 10-over par 81 and is tied for 58th. She started the steadies of all the Buffs with four pars out of the shoot. She had a pair of bogeys and a birdie put her at 1-over par seven holes into her round. She then shot nine-over par in the final 10 holes with four pars, five bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.
UC Davis' Paige Lee leads after the first round, shooting a 5-under par 66, three shots ahead of a trio of players tied for second place at 2-under par, Oregon's Cassy Isagawa, Stanford's Mariah Stackhouse and UC Irvine Kaley In. Three more players are tied at 1-under par 70.
As a team, the Buffs were tied for fifth on Par 3s, averaging 3.2 strokes per hole, and were seventh in Par 4s, averaging 4.4 strokes. The Buffs nine combined birdies were the sixth-most in the field on the day. Sunday's final round begins with a shotguns start at 9:30 a.m. MT.
“Everybody is close to playing well, hopefully we dusted off some of the rust and we'll be ready to go tomorrow,” Kelly concluded.
