Buffs Take Seventh At Peg Barnard Invite
February 15, 2015 | Women's Golf
STANFORD—Sophomore Esther Lee shot a 2-under par 69 to finish in the top 10 and the University of Colorado women's golf team shaved six strokes off its first round score and finished in seventh place in the first event of the spring season, the Peg Barnard Invitational, a 36-hole event hosted this weekend at the Stanford Golf Course.
The Buffs used a 12-over par 296, matching the fourth best team score in the field, on the second day to finish 30-over par 598.
“Esther really played well today, shooting in the 60s and finishing in the top 10,” CU coach Anne Kelly said. “Brittany (Fan) played pretty well, a 72, definitely a good day. Overall I'm not really happy with the finish, but I think we all learned what we need to work on to get better the rest of the spring season.”
Oregon opened the day in second place but nine strokes behind UC Davis, but ended up winning by three strokes with an 8-over par score of 576. UC Davis did take second place at 11-over par 579 while San Jose State was third at 13-over par 581. Host Stanford took fourth at 17-over 585 and Cal rounded out the top five at 24-over par 592. Gonzaga was one stroke behind the Bears at 25-over par 593 immediately ahead of the Buffs.
After briefly going above par with a bogey on the par 4 No. 10, her second hole of the day, Lee immediately brought it back to par and proceeded under par with back-to-back birdies on Nos. 11-12. She returned to even par with a bogey on the par 3 No. 17. She then reeled off eight straight pars before getting the Buffs only eagle of the day on the par 5 No. 7 to go to 2-under and pared her final hole to earn her 69.
Lee tied for sixth individually at even par 142. Her sixth place finish and round of 69 was a CU season low and both her best performances as a Buff. Her 69 was also tied for the lowest round in the field for the second round.
Freshman Brittany Fan shot a 1-over par 72 in the final round to finish the event tied for 16th at 6-over par 148. Fan began her round with four straight pars before going under par with a birdie on the par 4 No. 15. She then came back over par with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 16-17. Making the turn to the front nine, she had seven straight pars and a birdie to come back to even par. A bogey on the par 4 No. 9, her second to final hole, put her at 1-over par.
Junior Alexis Keating finished tied for 22nd after a final round 4-over 75 put her at 7-over 149 for the tournament. After a bogey to begin her round, she settled down for five consecutive pars, but then had bogeys on Nos. 16 and 17 to move to 3-over making the turn to the front nine. There, she birdied the par 3 No. 3 but had another set of back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 5-6 before paring out at 4-over.
Junior Allie Zech finished in 55th place at 19-over par 161 after shooting 9-over 80 in the second round. Zech started her round with four straight pars before three straight bogeys put her 3-over to close out the back nine. After making the turn, she had four straight pars before a pair of bogeys on Nos. 5-6 put her at 5-over and then consecutive bogeys on Nos. 9-10 put her at 9-over.
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi finished tied for 56th place at 20-over par 162 after a final round 12-over par 83. She birdied her first hole of the day to briefly go under par, but then a tough stretch of five straight holes with four bogeys and a 9 on the par 5 No. 16 put her at 7-over making the turn to the front nine. She had a bit of a roller coaster ride on the front nine with two pars, a bogey and another par before she went bogey, double-bogey, birdie, par and back-to-back bogeys to close out her round at 12-over.
The Buffs will next travel to Tarzana, Calif., in two weeks for the spring's second tournament, the Bruin Wave Invitational, hosted by UCLA and Pepperdine March 2-3.
