Buffs Tied For 11th With Play Suspended At Bruin Wave Invite
March 02, 2015 | Women's Golf
TARZANA, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team is tied for 11th at the Bruin Wave Invitational as play was suspended here in the second round Monday due to darkness.
The par-72, 6,173-yard course at El Caballero Country Club has seen a considerable amount of precipitation since Sunday night and the tournament was delayed for about 35 minutes on Monday as more rain rolled in.
The Buffaloes opened the day shooting a 25-over par 313 in the first round. Colorado moved up one spot before the horn sounded for the players to clear the course in round two. Colorado is 48-over par with each Buff having three holes left to finish Tuesday before the final round gets underway.
“It was not a good day for our team,” said Colorado head coach Anne Kelly. “Esther [Lee] and Brittany [Fan] were the bright spots, each playing pretty solid first rounds, otherwise it was one of our toughest days on the putting green that I have witnessed in a long time. Overall, our ball striking wasn't bad, but our main problem was the greens.”
Third-ranked Washington sits atop the leaderboard at 13-over par. San Diego State is 12 strokes behind at 25-over par and in second place. The No. 15 Oklahoma State Cowgirls and No. 5 UCLA Bruins, a tournament co-host are tied for third, each posting 26-over par scores and fifth-ranked Stanford is 29-over par, three shots behind to round out the top five.
Sophomore Esther Lee is tied for 19th at 7-over par through 33 holes. She turned in a solid 1-over par 73 performance in the first round, while tallying three birdies. The Los Alamitos, Calif. native found the second round to be a bit more challenging, as she is 6-over through 15 holes.
Freshman Brittany Fan is not far behind teammate Lee on the leaderboard, as she finds herself in 24th overall at 8-over par and is also finished with 33 holes. Fan carded a 73 in round one as well, sinking a team-high four birdies. Fan began the second round with another birdie, but then followed it up with a bogey and then remained at even-par through the next four. The following nine holes proved to be unforgiving, as Fan was 7-over, but rallied to par her final hole before play ended for the day.
Junior Jamie Oleksiew has posted the third-best overall score for the Buffaloes after 33 holes. She is 16-over par and tied for 54th overall. Oleksiew had a shaky first round at 10-over, but the CU upperclassman has found a better groove in the second frame, posting a 6-over par with three holes to go.
Sophomore Natalie Vivaldi enters Tuesday tied in 62nd with a 17-over par performance. Through 15 holes in the second round, Vivaldi has shaved nine strokes off her first round score to move up 10 places. She has pared 10 holes and sunk one birdie– an impressive improvement after she was 13-over in a difficult first round.
Junior Alexis Keating is tied for 72nd at 21-over par with three holes left to be played in the second round. Keating was 14-over par after the first round of action and has moved up five places with a 7-over par performance thus far in the second round. Over her last three holes on Monday, the Elma, Wash. native had two straight bogeys, but settled down to make her only birdie of the round on her last hole.
Stanford's Lauren Kim leads the tournament with the only subpar score at 1-under with two holes remaining in round two. Anica Yoo from Oregon State is one shot behind at even-par through 33 holes. Four players– Washington's Charlotte Thomas, San Diego State Aztec Sirene Blair, UCLA's Erynne Lee and Hayley Davis from Baylor are all tied for third at 2-over par and each have at least two holes to play before moving to round three.
The tournament concludes Tuesday, with players picking up where they left off at 9 a.m. MT and then immediately continue into the final round.
