Steur/Wojcik Drop USTA/ITA Consolation Match

November 07, 2014 | Tennis

FLUSHING, N.Y. For the second time in as many days, the University of Colorado women's tennis doubles team of senior Julyette Steur and freshman Kyra Wojcik pushed their opponents in the opening set, and for the second time, came up short in the consolation doubles back draw Friday evening at the USTA Billie Jean National King Tennis Center.

Steur and Wojcik, the Mountain Region champions gave Southern California's Gabby Smith and Giuliana Olmos all they could handle in the first set, falling in a first set tie-breaker, 7-6(7-4), then lost the second set, 6-0.

“Overall, a tremendous accomplishment to get here, to play in this field,” head coach Nicole Kenneally said.  “I'm really proud of their efforts.  As we discussed after the match, we want to get to these events and to win matches. Again, proud of them getting here, but we want to keep striving, keep working, getting better and continue to get more out of ourselves and each other as a team, as a program.

“Again, we played a solid first set, we dropped in the second; they (USC) got better.  We'll figure out whether we're staying until Sunday or if we can get a flight back, but either way we'll take advantage of the next couple of days of practice whether in New York City or in Boulder.  We just want to keep playing and get ready for the spring semester.  Overall a good semester for the team, but we're always striving for more.”

Steur/Wojcik represent a CU team making its first ever trip to the USTA/ITA National Indoor Tournament.  It was only the second fall season loss for Steur and Wojcik in seven matches playing together. Colorado is also one of five Pac-12 Conference tandems playing this week in New York City.

The USTA/ITA National Indoor Intercollegiate Championships in NYC is not the only event the CU tennis team is participating in, as junior Alexandra Aiello went 1-1 on the day in singles play, reaching the Round of 16 at the 2014 Lakewood Ranch Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic.

The fifth annual event features a 32-player singles draw and a 16-team doubles draw over the next three days in Lakewood Ranch, Fla.

Aiello defeated Tennessee's Laurence Guevremont in three sets, 7-6(1), 5-7, 6-3 for her third straight win this fall season. The win was her sixth of the fall campaign and her fifth career tally at CU when the match goes three sets. Later in the day, Aiello lost to Florida sophomore Spencer Liang 6-3, 7-6(4).

Earlier on Friday, Aiello teamed with senior Ashley Tiefel for an 8-1 winner over North Florida's Marina Cunningham and Taylor Hollander in the Round of 16.  It was Aiello/Tiefel's second win in as many matches during the fall season.

Later in the evening, Aiello/Tiefel lost to the top seed from Oklahoma State in the quarterfinals, 8-1 to Katernia Adomovic and Vladica Babic.

“Considering we're playing on a different surface (clay) and in warm humid conditions, I'm happy with how the girls battled today in both singles and doubles,” said assistant coach Blake Mosley.  “The longer points on this surface are helping with our point construction and developing our girls' identity on the court.  Ashley continues in the consolation bracket tomorrow (Saturday) and we will pick up another singles for Alex.  A practice doubles match will also be on the books.”
