Tennis Cruises To Open Season With Victory

January 24, 2015 | Tennis

GREELEY – The University of Colorado women's tennis team began the 2015 spring season the same way it did last year - on the same exact day - defeating the University of Northern Colorado Bears, 7-0, Saturday afternoon at the Work Out West Health and Recreation in Greeley.

The Buffaloes also played the Bears to open the 2014 spring a year ago on Jan. 24 in Boulder with the same result 7-0. It was the season opener for both schools.

CU has now won 19-straight in the series and has dominated their in-state foe holding a commanding 31-2 advantage all-time.

Saturday's match was the first time the two schools played in Greeley since 1993.

“I'm happy with the way we played and competed today,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally.  “We handled ourselves well in pressure situations in our first match of the year. We're looking forward to getting back to practice and competing against Air Force (Friday, Jan. 30) and the home opener against Kansas State (Saturday, Jan. 31) next week.”

The Buffaloes started play taking two of three doubles points to secure the point. Sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz and freshman Kyra Wojcik teamed up for the first time this year as a tandem taking a 6-1 winner at No. 3.

CU clinched the doubles point with senior Ashley Tiefel and junior Alex Aiello taking a 7-5 win at No. 2. It was the third win of the year in four matches for the CU pair.

In singles, the visitors won five of the next singles slots in straight sets.  Bokhua, Ormeño Ruiz, and Steur each won their respective singles matches at the top three singles positions. Steur clinched the team win for her 50th career singles victory.  Wojcik also won in straight sets at No. 5, as did Tiefel at No. 6.

Overall, it was Aiello's 26 career singles win, Ormeño Ruiz won her 25th, and Tiefel secured her 24th singles tally.
