BOULDER -- The University of Colorado sophomore Abrianna Torres (track) and junior Xavier Johnson (men's basketball) earned CU Athlete of the Week honors Tuesday for their play during the week of December 8-14.
Torres got her 2014-15 season off to a great start when she won the pentathlon on Saturday at the Colorado School of Mines Alumni Open and Multi meet, recording a score of 3,617 points. She started the day off with a time of 9.10 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles and followed that up with a high jump mark of 5-3.75, which tied for fourth. She won the shot put portion of the event with a toss of 42-9.5. She placed second in the long jump (17-6.25) and finished the day with a time of 2:44.54 (15th overall) in the 800 meters.
Johnson averaged 18 points on 75 percent shooting (12-of-16) that included 83.3 percent from the 3-point line (5-of-6), along with 6.5 rebounds in Colorado's 1-1 week with a home win over Northern Colorado (93-68) and a home loss to Colorado State (62-60). He scored a game-high 20 points on 7-of-10 shooting with a pair of 3-pointers and five rebounds against the Rams. Four days later, the Los Angeles, Calif., native added 16 points coming off the bench in the win over the Bears. He was 5-of-6 from the field and a perfect 3-of-3 from the 3-point arc, and tied team honors on the boards with eight. The 20-point effort against CSU was his first his 20-point game of the season (seventh career) and he now has grabbed five or more rebounds in five straight games (41 for his career).
This was the first award of the season for both athletes.
Also nominated for this week's honor: Lexy Kresl (women's basketball) and Mark Jones (track and field).
Kresl, a senior, had 17 points against Missouri after being held to 10 in the previous two games combined. During that stretch she had gone 0-for-10 from 3-point range and rebounded to hit 5-of-11 against the Tigers. The five 3-pointers tied a season high (Missouri State) and it marked her sixth career game with five or more 3-pointers. Her five 3-pointers also pushed her career total to 144 and tying Jasmina Ilic (2003-07) for eighth on CU's all-time list. She has made a 3-pointer in 77 of 104 career games and has 38 games with two or more.
Jones, senior, had a great performance at the Mines Alumni Open, finishing second in the high jump (6-6.75). He was also fourth in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.46 and fifth in the long jump (23-2.75).
