Buffs Tied For 11th At Peg Bernard Invitational
February 15, 2014 | Women's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – Through 18 holes of play, the University of Colorado women's golf team sits tied for 11th at the Peg Bernard Invitational.
The No. 50 Buffaloes hit the links for the first time this spring, shooting a 21-over par 305 at the par-71, 6,084-yard Stanford Golf Course.
“Not a great day for us,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “Kristin (Coleman) played well despite two double bogies. Natalie (Vivaldi) and Jamie (Oleksiew) are overcoming injuries and working their way back. Alexis (Keating) had a good ball striking day, but struggled with the putter. Jenny (Coleman's) game was a bit rusty, but she is a great player and will get back on track. Definitely the putting was tough, but just being on green grass after three weeks of indoor practice is
a bonus. With a round of golf under our belts for the first time this season, I am hopeful tomorrow will be a better day for the Buffs.”
Host and No. 9-ranked Stanford leads with a 3-over par 287. Stanford has claimed the event's title seven times since its inception in 1995, most recently in 2013 after shooting a tournament-record 569. The 14-team field includes eight teams ranked in the top 50, with four ranked teams in the tournament's top five. No. 37 UC Davis is in second with a 7-over par 291, with San Jose State just a stroke away at third after shooting an 8-over par 292. No. 42 Denver comes in at fourth with an 11-over par 295, and Oregon rounds out the top five at 12-over par 296.
Senior Kristin Coleman leads the Buffs with a 2-over par 73, tying her for 13th individually. Despite two double bogeys on her front nine, Coleman shot an even par or better on 15 holes and hit a team-high three birdies.
Sophomore Alexis Keating is tied for 26th after shooting 4-over par 75. She started the day with a bogie on her first hole, the par-4 No. 10, but got a birdie on the next, also a par-4. Keating ended her front nine with a 3-over par score. On her back nine, she stumbled with a bogey on the par-4 No. 2, but shot an even par on the other eight holes.
Shooting a 6-over par 77 in the first round, senior Jenny Coleman is tied for 42nd. Coleman struggled early in the day, recording five bogeys on her first nine holes. Though she double bogeyed on the par-4 No. 6, she also hit a birdie on the par-5 No. 1, marking her program-best 282nd birdie.
Freshman Natalie Vivaldi and sophomore Jamie Oleksiew round out the top 70 at 64th and 70th, respectively. The par-4 hole 13 proved to be a challenge for all the Buffs as each player either bogeyed or double bogeyed there. Vivaldi and Oleksiew both double bogeyed on No. 13 and the par-4 No. 10. In just her second collegiate tournament, Vivaldi shot a 9-over par 80. She had four double bogeys and two bogeys, but shot par or better on her back nine. Oleksiew, who shot 11-over par 82, had a rough opening to the tournament, having just three holes of par or better. She saw improvement to close the day, shooting 3-over par on her back nine.
UNLV's Dana Finkelstein (No. 33) and California's Lucia Gutierrez lead all players with 2-under par 69s. Two of the host team's individuals rank in the top three on the player leader board. Casey Danielson and No. 8 Mariah Stackhouse are tied for third with 1-under par 70s. Joining the Stanford duo for third place are Oregon's Cassy Isagawa (No. 36), San Jose State's Rachelle Reali and Oregon State's Lauren Sewell.
The Buffs complete the Peg Bernard Invitational with the final 18 holes on Sunday. CU gets back in action on March 3 and 4 with the Bruin Wave Invitational in Tarzana, Calif.
