Colorado-Southern Utah Quotes
March 22, 2014 | Women's Basketball
Colorado Head Coach Linda Lappe
General
“That was a tough team we just played [Southern Utah]. They do so many good things both offensively and defensively. We had a tough time scoring in the first half; their defense was really stingy and they were doing a lot of good things to keep us away from the basket. I really liked the way that we opened up the second half, and I thought that was the difference in the game. We came out with a lot of energy and we also came out with a different level of confidence. At the end, we were able to do just enough to hold our lead and win the game.”
On 14-Block Defensive Effort
“We had great help side. Some of it was the person who was actually guarding the player and blocking the shot, but most of it was our team defense coming over and being strong on the help side. It was a really physical game out there on both sides; it was probably the most physical game we have been in all year. I loved our aggressiveness.”
On What It Means to Still Be Playing Late in March
“Well, there are a lot of teams that aren't [playing anymore]. We talked about that before the game. There are a lot of players whose careers have ended and some players who won't play again until November. As an athlete, you have such a limited number of games and sometimes games at the end are taken for granted. We just want to keep playing games. We're enjoying it, we're having a lot of fun, and the young players are getting a lot of experience.”
On CU G Arielle Roberson's Second Half Performance
“She was in the game in the first half, but not getting a lot of touches. Arielle [Roberson] needs our offense to work. She needs everybody around her to move and when we're all moving and helping each other score, we all become better scorers. That's when we score 51 points in a half instead of 28. Arielle came out with a different mindset and she's a competitor. She knew she needed to step up and be more aggressive within the flow of the offense.”
On CU C Rachel Hargis' Performance
“I thought she [Hargis] took really good shots today and that's the key. She got some great shots on the block and different presence about her when she got the ball. She wasn't in a rush and was just taking her time.”

Sophomore Arielle Roberson
On The Excitement of Moving Onto The Next Round Of The WNIT
“It feels great. I think the smile says it all. It feels really good.”
On Her Strong Performance in the Second Half After Struggling In The First
“I just hit the switch. In the first half, I just came out timid and was kind of going through the motions. I wasn't being real aggressive. In the second half, I decided to be myself again and just go out there, be aggressive and play.”
On the Adjustments the Coaches Made Throughout the Game
“Coach Jonas [Chatterton] in the first half was saying shoot the ball, and then coach [Linda] Lappe came in at halftime and was saying the same thing. So I felt I might as well shoot it.”
On the Possibility of Playing April If They Continue to Win
“It's like Rachel [Hargis] said. Other careers are ending and we don't want Ashley [Wilson], Brittany [Wilson] or Rachel's career to end just yet. We want them to go out with something positive. It feels like an honor to be playing with those three seniors. It's just an indescribable, fantastic feeling.”
On The Team's 14 Blocked Shots In The Game
'I guess communicating well like if you got beat or you needed help was a big factor. I think we did that very well in practice as well, and I think it just carried over.”
Senior Rachel Hargis
On The Possibility That The Next Game May Be Her Last In a CU Uniform
“It feels great to be able to continue to play at home and make a great impact on the game. That's all you can ask for when you're a senior.”
On the Possibility of Playing April If They Continue to Win
“It's always great to be able to continue to play when other teams are going home and other careers are done. We want to play as long as we can. It's an awesome feeling.”
On the Team's 14 Blocked Shots In The Game
“I think we had great help within the post. Their post players are pretty aggressive, and I think we did a great job helping each other out. Like when the initial defender would get beat, it was the help side blocks that helped out a lot.”
Southern Utah Head Coach JR Payne
On CU As an Opponent
“They're everything a Pac-12 team should be. They're physical, athletic, big and strong and have some kids that can shoot the ball, so they're everything I expected from a great Pac-12 team.”
On the Difference
“The nature of our team is that we're pretty gritty and pretty tough. We never really back down, so I thought that we were kind of outmatched physically today, but from a toughness and a grit standpoint, we definitely held our own.”
On Sr. Carli Moreland Who Graduated From Legacy High School
“She's had such an incredible impact on our team and our program. It's really pretty neat for a player to be able to end her career in front of her family. Not many people get to do that. A lot of times you're off in a different place, so it's kind of fitting that we could end here in Colorado for her. She was great tonight. She's been deathly ill for the last few days, so for her to be able to come out and play the way she did was very special.”
On the Amount of Turnovers
“It's unfortunate that we turned it over 23 times. That was our Achilles heel because they only made a few more field goals than us, but our turnovers hurt us. They're a team that, on film, struggles with full court pressure and has turned the ball over against TCU. They had the same struggle, so we thought that was something that we could use to our advantage. If we hadn't had so many sick kids, I think we could have done it earlier, but with that many sick ones, you're just trying to hang on until you don't have enough time left.”
On SUU's Bench Play
“I think our bench has been pretty good throughout the year, and I thought that they were good defensively, I thought we rebounded well from the bench.
