Women Golfers In Sixth At Spring Break Classic
March 25, 2014 | Women's Golf
KAPALUA, Hawai'i – A challenging second day at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic saw the University of Colorado women's golf team slip one spot to sixth place.
The No. 49 ranked Buffaloes recorded a 15-over par 303 on Tuesday, two shots higher than their first round effort for a 28-over 604 total, which has Colorado in sixth place heading into the final round, though the Buffs are just two strokes out of fourth.
No. 15 Pepperdine is alone in first place with a 1-over 577 score, as it broke a first round tie with Washington by posting the best single round score of the tournament. The Huskies, ranked No. 10, are in second (580), with No. 37 UC-Davis in third (594); Santa Clara (602) and San Jose State (603) round out the top five.
“We started out well and hung in there pretty well,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “I think we were in about third position for a little while. We finished off on the ocean holes and the wind really picked up and we just couldn't handle it too well. It was pretty disappointing.
“Jenny (Coleman) had a rough day. She doesn't do that often, but that's going to happen every once in a while. The others were really picking it up. Kristin (Coleman) bogeyed her last three holes, and Jamie (Oleksiew) had some tough holes coming in, and so did Natalie (Vivaldi). Alexis (Keating) still wasn't feeling very well today. Hopefully she and Jenny will be back on track tomorrow. Natalie's really coming along, it's just that both she and Kristin had that finish, because they really had a good day going. Anyway, we'll see what we can do tomorrow.”
Freshman Natalie Vivaldi is having one of the best tournaments of her young career. She posted a second consecutive 74 on the 6,022-yard, par-72 Bay Course at Kapalua, giving her a 36-hole total of 148 (4-over par), tying her for 11th place. Vivaldi started strong for the second day in a row: she birdied her first hole of the day, the 471-yard, par-5 No. 6, and the parred the next eight holes before moving to 2-under after birdying No. 15; she finished off the back nine with three more pars, but ran into trouble on her final five holes, bogeying four of them in windy conditions to end the day. She was also 2-under after 10 holes in the first round before struggling down the stretch.
Senior Kristin Coleman made the biggest improvement for the Buffs on the second day, trimming five strokes to shoot 1-over par 73. Coleman jumped 25 spots and is currently tied for 20th at 7-over par 151. As she did on Monday, Coleman made four bogeys, with the Nos. 4 and 8 still proving the major challenges. Managing no birdies in the first round, Coleman made three in the second. Coleman shot par or better on 12 straight holes, but then found trouble nearing the end, making three straight bogeys before finishing the round with a birdie.
Sister Jenny Coleman had a rough second round, slipping to 27th after an 8-over par performance on Tuesday. Coleman went under par when she made her first and only birdie of the day (and the 302nd of her career) on the par-5 No. 6, but made three bogeys on her next five holes. She struggled to end the day, having three double bogeys, including the par-3 No. 17 that she nearly made a hole-in-one on in the first round.
Sophomore Jamie Oleksiew was one of only two Buffs to improve on the second day, moving into 32nd place with a 9-over par 153 (77-76). Oleksiew went par or better on 13 holes, including two birdies, but once again hit a rough patch as she neared the end of her round. As she did on Monday, Oleksiew shot over par on holes 2 and 3.
Still battling through an illness, sophomore Alexis Keating is tied for 80th with a 21-over par 165 scorecard. Keating showed improvement on her third hole, the par-4, 324-yard No. 16, going par on the hole that she had previously double bogeyed. Keating shot six more pars, but made 11 bogeys.
Competing as an individual, sophomore Allie Zech is tied for 45th. Zech is 17-over par 161. Zech had a tough second round, making three double bogeys and five bogeys. She managed 10 pars.
Golfstat's No. 27 ranked individual, Pepperdine's Grace Na, holds sole ownership of the top spot, shooting an impressive 66 in the second round, for an 8-under par 136 scorecard. UC Davis' Betty Chen and Washington's Ying Luo are tied for second with 2-under par 142s. Two more Washington Huskies have made their way into the top five, with No. 25 Jennifer Yang and SooBin Kim sitting at fourth and fifth, respectively.
The Buffs conclude play in the Spring Break Classic on Wednesday, with the final round set for a shotgun start at 11:45 a.m. MDT. CU is nearing the end of the regular season and will co-host the Silverado Showdown in Napa, Calif., April 14-15, the final tune-up ahead of the Pac-12 Championships next month in Corvallis, Ore.
