Buffs Finish Ninth At Bruin Wave Invitational

March 04, 2014 | Women's Golf

TARZANA, Calif. – The University of Colorado women's golf team slipped one spot in Tuesday's final round to finish ninth at the Bruin Wave Invitational.

The Buffaloes finished 63-over par 927 (297-313-317) at the challenging par-72, 6,173-yard El Caballero Country Club. The Buffs began the tournament strong to tie for fifth after the first round, but faced increasing challenges as the days and rounds wore on.

“Not a great day for us,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said. “It was a tough golf course. Alexis (Keating) had very steady, consistent play this week. Jamie (Oleksiew) made a nice comeback; her wrist was feeling a bit better. She battled through some of the pain and played a pretty solid round considering everything. I'm a little bit disappointed, but I'm happy that Alexis had a pretty solid tournament and with the comeback by Jamie, Natalie (Vivaldi) showed some pretty good signs this week. Hopefully we'll get Jenny and Kristin (Coleman) on track and we'll be ready for the next one.”

The course proved to be a real challenge, with just one team finishing under par. Top 20 teams comprised the tournament's top five. Though there were some big moves made after the first round, the standings remained relatively the same between the second and third.

No. 1 ranked Southern California was the sole team to shoot under par, finishing 1-under par 863 (296-277-290). Hosts Pepperdine (No. 17) and UCLA (No. 2) traded spots to place in second and third. The Waves shot 12-over par 876, while the Bruins shot 22-over par 886. Eleventh ranked Arizona jumped a spot to finish 35-over par 903. No. 12 Oklahoma State rounded out the top five at 39-over par 903.

Sophomore Alexis Keating continued to have a strong tournament. After two 74s on Monday, Keating shot 6-over par 78 in the final round to tie for 18th. The performance was Keating's first top-20 finish. Though she hit two double bogeys in the final round, she shot par or better on eight of her holes on the back nine.

Senior Jenny Coleman finished tied for 37th with a 17-over par 233 (71-80-82) scorecard. Coleman began the tournament with the Buffs' best round, but had more difficulty in the closing rounds. Though she improved on the par-5, 495-yard No. 7, hitting an even par on the hole she double bogeyed on in the second round, Coleman shot bogey or worse on five holes on which she had previously shot par or better.

Natalie Vivaldi tied for 42nd in just her third collegiate tournament. Vivaldi shot 18-over par 234 (75-78-81). The troublesome No. 10 that had previously left her unscathed cost Vivaldi her first of two double bogeys on the final day. Despite those, Vivaldi hit an even par on the remaining seven holes of her back nine.

Senior Kristin Coleman tied for 61st with a 25-over par 241 (77-81-83) finish. Coleman continued to have troubles on the No. 10, shooting over par on the hole in each round, but did improve to shoot an even par on four holes that she had bogeyed on in the previous round.

Though an aggravated wrist injury forced Jamie Oleksiew to withdraw from the second round, she shot the Buffs' best final round, trimming 10 strokes off her first round score to shoot 4-over par 76. Oleksiew was one of two CU players to hit a birdie in the final round, and the only one to hit multiple. Though she double bogeyed on the par-3 No. 6 and the par-4 No. 18, Olksiew recorded three birdies and hit an even par on 10 others.

Three Women of Troy took home top individual honors. Sixth ranked Kyung Kim earned the individual title with a 70-70-73—213 (3-under par) performance. Teammates Annie Park (the nation's 12th ranked player, who jumped seven spots on the final day) and Doris Chen tied for second with 2-under par 214s. Three players from the host schools each tied for fourth. Pepperdine's Marissa Chow and Grace Na and UCLA's Alison Lee (Golfstat's No. 2) shot on even par 216.

Next up for the Buffs is the Clover Cup in Mesa, Ariz. from Friday, March 14 to Sunday, March 16.
