Distance Runners Outlast the Competition

April 19, 2014 | Track and Field

AZUSA, Calif. – Ben Saarel led the University of Colorado track and field team to a first place finish in the 1,500-meter run at the Bryan Clay Invitational on Friday, setting a new personal best and earning a spot on the all-time top performance and all-time performers list at CU.

Saarel finished the 1500 in 3:41.54, placing him seventh on the CU all-time top performances list and fifth on the all-time top performers list. He entered competition this weekend after establishing another top performance at home last weekend. He finished first in the 800-meter run last weekend at Potts Field with a time of 1:51.11.

Garrett Losty also earned fourth place in the 400-meter hurdles after finishing in 53.87, shattering his previous personal record as well.

On the women's side, the Buffs also found success in the 1500. Melanie Nun earned a third place finish, crossing the finish line in 4:23.48. With the finish, she smashed her own previous personal best of 4:25.50.

At the Mt. SAC Relays, all eyes were on Jake Hurysz and Shalaya Kipp as they ran in the invitational elite sections. Hurysz recorded a 3:42.53 time in the 1500 to finish ninth overall. Kipp finished fifteenth in the 5,000-meter run in 15:54.13. The finish earned her a spot on the Buffs' all-time performance list in the twelfth position after Sara (Gorton) Slattery's 15:51.55 performance in 2002.  She also snatched the sixth spot on the all-time top performers record book.

Liz Tremblay recorded a great performance once again the 800-meters. She finished fifth with a time of 2:07.28, .10 seconds faster than her time earlier this season at the Stanford Invite. With the time, she earns another spot on the CU all-time top performances list, totaling nine overall.

In addition, Kelsey English outlasted the competition to take first in the high jump with a leap of 5-8.75.

The Buffs are back in action Saturday evening at the Long Beach Invitational and the Mt. SAC Relays. For more information, please visit CUBuffs.com.
