English Snags First Place Finish

April 19, 2014 | Track and Field

NORWALK, Calif. – Kelsey English jumped 5-11.25 in the high jump, breaking her own previous personal best and taking her second first place finish on Saturday at the Long Beach Invitational.

“The weekend gave me confidence that I am moving in the right direction and will achieve my goal height of six feet shortly,” English said. “I am very excited for future practices and meets to continue progressing and show off my technical gains in the event.”

English entered Saturday's competition with a win at her back. On Friday, she jumped 5-8.75 to earn a first place finish at the Mt. SAC Relays. On Saturday, she pushed herself and jumped even further to beat her own personal best at 5-11.25. Her previous personal record was 5-10.75, established last year.

“Kelsey has been incredibly diligent with her technical training in practice and she is now at the point where she can replicate those gains in a competition setting,” coach Lindsey Malone said. “From what I have seen in practice and competition thus far, she is capable of something pretty amazing this year. She performed like a pro and has two big wins with top-notch competition this week. I'm looking forward to seeing her achieve her goals in our upcoming championship meets.”

In addition, the Buffs found success in the women's long jump. Brittany Lewis finished fourth, leaping 18-8. Abrianna Torres finished eighth with a jump of 18-5.75.

Emily Hunsucker competed in the invitational elite section of the hammer throw at Mt. SAC, finishing eleventh with a throw of 206-01. The throw came on her first attempt, and she produced steady marks afterward to maintain her position.

On the track, Austin Mitsch ran the 200-meter, finishing in 21.60. The time gave him a third place accolade.

The Buffs will be at the Jack Christiansen Invitational next Saturday in Fort Collins. Please visit CUBuffs.com for more details.
