Golfers Tied For Second At Wyoming Classic

Golfers Tied For Second At Wyoming Classic

April 07, 2014 | Men's Golf

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — The University of Colorado men's golf team is tied for second after two rounds of the Wyoming Cowboy Classic, both of which were completed here Monday.

No. 11 Oklahoma assumed the lead after recording the third best afternoon score to go with its second best effort in the morning to finish the day with an even-par 560 total.  That's good for a one-shot lead over the No. 52 Buffaloes and No.39 Brigham Young, both in with 561 scores; Utah is in fourth at 562 with Gonzaga rounding out the top five with a 565 count.

Colorado held the first round lead after firing a 9-under 271 score, which led Oklahoma by four shots.  It tied the second best team score in CU history on a par-70 course, matching the first round score in the 1979 Oklahoma City All-College Golf Classic; the only one better came in this very tournament three years ago, a 10-under 270, also in the first round.

The conditions were pristine in the morning, but the winds picked up a bit in the afternoon making thing a bit more challenging on the 7,133-yard, par-70 Talking Stick Golf Club's North Course layout.

“Tomorrow will be good, I wish we were way out in front but we're in the hunt to win the tournament and we can definitely always gain from that kind of experience,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said.  “We played pretty solid in the morning but just didn't as well in the afternoon, when we didn't have as many putts fall for us after the greens firmed up a bit.”

Three Buffaloes are tied for fifth: junior David Oraee, sophomore Philip Juel-Berg and freshman Ethan Freeman, all in at 3-under par 137 through 36 holes.

Oraee opened with a 4-under 66, his collegiate career low gross score, as his morning round saw him score five birdies and 12 pars with just one bogey; he came back with an afternoon 71.  Juel-Berg fashioned his day with rounds of 68 and 69 and played the par-4 holes third best in the field at 3-under, while Freeman scored his by making a little bit of history.

Playing here as an individual, he blistered the course for his collegiate career best 65 in the morning, scoring six birdies and 11 pars in scoring nines of 34-31 and matching the low gross score by a freshman in school history.  That was recorded just last October by teammate Jeremy Paul in the UTEP Give 'Em Five Invitational (Paul set the mark for the overall mark in relation to par at minus-7 as well with that effort).  Freeman shot a 2-over 72 his second time around Talking Stick.

Oraee, Juel-Berg and Freeman all had seven birdies, 25 pars and four bogeys over the course of their 36 holes Monday, the birdie counts tying for the 14th most in the field while the pars were tied for 12th.  Juel-Berg and Freeman set career 36 hole scoring bests with their 137 scores.

“Philip and David had nice rounds in the afternoon, and did a good job of managing things close,” Edwards said.  “And Ethan had a nice day overall in his first competition this spring.”

Freshman identical twins Jeremy and Yannik Paul are tied for 27th and 34th respectively, Jeremy in with a 67-76—143 scorecard with Yannik right behind him with a 70-74—144 effort.  The 67 by Jeremy was his 17th subpar round of the season, just one off the single-season team record.

Freshman Andrew Bonner carded a 1-over 71 in the morning but suffered a back injury early in the second round; he tried to play through it, and was struggling at 10-over par with three holes left and decided to withdraw.  It won't be known until Tuesday if he can play in the final round or not.

Gonzaga's Sean Walsh is the individual leader after posting a 68-65—133 scorecard, good for a two shot lead over UC-Davis' Josh Granger.

The final round will begin with an 8:30 a.m. MDT shotgun start Tuesday, CU's final tournament action ahead of the Pac-12 Championships later this month; Colorado will be paired with Oklahoma and BYU and will tee off on No. 1.  The Buffaloes will have one final tune-up, a dual match against Texas A & M in Hutchinson, Kan., on April 20, a week before the Pac-12 meet in Tucson which is April 25-27.
