Buffs Close Track Championships; Verdon Battles In 5K

EUGENE, Ore. - University of Colorado sophomore Carrie Verdon wrapped up the Buffaloes competition at the NCAA Track and Field Championships with a 17th place finish in the 5,000-meter run on the final day at Hayward Field on the campus of the University of Oregon, Saturday afternoon.
Verdon recorded a 16:28.60 time, her third fastest mark of the spring season. Verdon's best time in the 5,000-meters this season was a personal best 15:59.83 at the Payton Jordan Invitational at Stanford back on May 4 where she finished 13th overall.
Marielle Hall of Texas won Saturday's race with a 15:35.11 time, followed by Stanford's Aisling Cuffe (15:37.74), and two-time defending champion Abbey D'Agostino of Dartmouth, was third (15:43.54).
“Carrie ended up a good note, despite suffering from food poisoning the last two days,” CU head coach Mark Wetmore said. “She was unable to run and leave her hotel room, and really wanted to give it a try today. She still went out and picked some people off and moved up to 17th, just one spot shy of being an All-American. Hope that made her a little more happier, she's tough and she's back for a couple of more years.”
Texas A&M won the women's team event with 75 points, followed by Texas (66) and host Oregon in third with 59 points. CU finished 19th overall with 12 points.
On the men's side, the Ducks won the team event with 88 points, followed by Florida (70) and Texas A&M (41.5). The CU men tied for 64th overall with two points.
Up next for the Buffs for a select few will be the USA Track and Field Outdoor Championships in Sacramento, Calif., June 26-29.
