CU Begins Season 2-0
August 24, 2014 | Soccer
BOULDER – Senior Darcy Jerman scored her first goal of the season to lift the University of Colorado women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Northern Colorado Sunday afternoon at Prentup Field.
Similar to their first match of the season, the Buffs came out firing on offense, creating multiple scoring chances in the first half, and were finally able to capitalize after halftime.
In the 61st minute of play, Colorado's Kahlia Hogg took the Buffs' corner and the ball deflected off the hand of Northern Colorado keeper Kaitlin Ruff. CU's Jerman was in perfect position at the far post to tap the ball in and give Colorado the 1-0 lead.
"It's really important for us [to have these two wins]," said Jerman. "It's the beginning of the season and we just want to build off of that. Two wins is exactly what we want and we're going to just keep going up from here."
Colorado improved to 2-0 on the season and recorded its second win in this year's Colorado Cup.
"We won the game and that's always the most important thing," said Colorado head coach Danny Sanchez.
Northern Colorado had a chance to tie the match with only three minutes remaining, when Bears' forward Essence Ortiz-Laneir played the ball off a CU header that was sent backward toward the Buffs' goal. One-on-one versus Colorado keeper Kate Scheele, Ortiz-Laneir's shot hit the cross bar and landed in Scheele's hands. Â
The Buffs turned in another stellar defensive performance, holding UNC to only six shots and three shots on goal. In eight meetings against Northern Colorado, CU is a perfect 8-0 and has shutout the Bears in every match, outscoring them 20-0.
Colorado hits the road for the first time this season, when they travel to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational on Friday, Aug. 29. They face UNLV at 8 p.m. The Buffs are 1-1 in two matches against the Rebels. Colorado defeated UNLV 3-1 last season.
