Tennis Begins Strong At CU Invitational

BOULDER – On the first day of the largest University of Colorado Invitational in its history, the women's tennis team reached the winners circle in all four doubles matches, Thursday afternoon at the South Campus Tennis Courts.
The six-team invitational features the Buffaloes, Arkansas, Liberty, New Mexico, Southern Illinois and Utah.
Day two of the invite begins Friday with doubles at 8:30 a.m. with singles to follow.
“We started strong in our first tournament of the year,” said CU head coach Nicole Kenneally. “With two rounds of doubles with four combinations, we'll try different combinations this weekend. Overall, it was a good start. We encourage everyone to come out to the South Campus Courts this weekend and watch some very good tennis.”
Day one featured a slew of doubles matches from all six schools. Juniors Julyette Steur and Alex Aiello defeated a pair from Arkansas juniors Flavia Araujo and Nicole Breaux, 7-5. Also in the earlier doubles session, senior Ashley Tiefel and freshman Tina Bokhua blanked freshman Peyton Jennings and sophomore Elly Fryberger, 6-0.
It was the first collegiate matches playing together for the CU doubles teams.
In the second doubles session, Steur and sophomore Nuria Ormeño Ruiz teamed up for their very first time on the court, defeating junior Belen Rivera and senior Brittany Yang, 6-2; and Aiello and Tiefel evened their career record with each other at two, shutting out New Mexico sophomores Susan Baklini and Rachana Bhat, 6-0.
