Golfers In Eighth After Two Rounds At UNM Tucker
September 26, 2014 | Men's Golf
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — The University of Colorado men's golf team had an uncharacteristic off day here Friday, as after two rounds, the Buffaloes find themselves in eighth place in the 60th Annual William H. Tucker Invitational.
Host and No. 33 New Mexico is running away from the field after 36 holes, as the Lobos recorded a pair of 11-under par 277 team rounds for a score of 554. San Diego State is currently a distant second, despite a solid 7-under team score of 569; No. 16 Texas Tech is the only other school under par, in third at 5-under 571. New Mexico State (581) and UNLV (586) round out the top five.
Colorado opened with a 5-over 293 but was one of six schools in the second round that couldn't crack the 300-barrier, shooting exactly that for a 593 total.
Sophomore Jeremy Paul is pacing the Buffaloes through two rounds, as he fashioned rounds of 70 and 73 for a 1-under 143 score on the 7,562-yard, par-72 UNM Championship course design. Paul scored a team-best eight birdies, which is seventh best in the 92-man field, while also scoring 22 pars with a team-best in fewest holes over par with six, five of those bogeys.
Sophomore Ethan Freeman is tied for 48th with a 74-77—151 performance (7-over par), as he had three birdies, a team-best 23 pars and 10 bogeys Friday. Yet another Buff soph, Yannik Paul, was CU's next best performer, with duplicate rounds of 76 having him tied for 55th at 8-over 152. After a morning effort that had him score no birdies but 15 pars, he came back with for birds in round two, but eight bogeys forced his score into the black.
Senior David Oraee opened fairly strong with a 1-over 73, but had his afternoon troubles with an 80 his second time around the UNM track, his 9-over 153 total tying him for 63rd. His card included five birdies and 20 pars, offset by eight bogeys and two doubles, nine of the latter two coming in round two.
Junior Philip Juel-Berg had his struggles for a second straight tournament, though he improved from the first to second rounds Friday; tied for 66th with an 80-740—154 score (10-over par), he had no birdies for the second straight round to open play, but bounced back with CU's only eagle on the day in the afternoon (one of just 14 in the field).
Junior Drew Trujillo is competing here individually (his scores don't count toward the team total), and he is tied for 21st after posting a 72-74—146 scorecard Friday. That's also good for second among the 17 players participating as individuals (two back of the top spot). He had a fairly steady day, scoring six birdies, second-most by a Buff, with 23 pars, six bogeys and a double, with his seven holes over par also the second fewest on the team.
“Other than Jeremy it was a tough day team-wise,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said. “Overall we made too many unforced errors. There was just too much general sloppiness, but all of those things are fixable and within our control. I expect us to have a good day tomorrow. It is important to learn a few things from today but also forget it and move on.
“It was really nice to see Drew play well. He has been working very hard and he had a solid day.”
New Mexico's Gavin Green is the individual leader through two rounds, as he recorded a 9-under 135 total Friday with rounds of 65 and 70; that's good for a one shot edge over San Diego State's Xander Schaufelle (67-69—136).
The final round of the tournament is set for an 8 a.m. shotgun Saturday; CU will be paired with UNLV, BYU and Colorado State. The Buffs will then turn right around and host the Fifth Annual Mark Simpson-CU Invitational Monday and Tuesday at Colorado National Golf Club in Erie.
